Sorrow has cast a shadow over the judicial circles in Egypt with the announcement of the death of Counselor Ahmed El-Zend, the former Minister of Justice and former President of the Judges Club of Egypt, at the age of nearly 80, following a sudden deterioration in his health condition.
The departure came days after he was admitted to a hospital in Cairo on September 17, following a rapid health crisis. As days passed, the developments in his medical condition necessitated his transfer to the intensive care unit and his reliance on ventilators. On September 23, doctors announced that Counselor Ahmed El-Zend's condition had improved and was stable, although he still required ventilators at that time. However, his health deteriorated thereafter, before his soul departed to its Creator early today (Saturday).
The Judges Club of Egypt mourned the deceased, announcing the funeral procession and the performance of the funeral prayer after the afternoon prayer at the Mosque of Field Marshal Tantawi in Cairo, to lay him to rest in the family graves on the Ain Sokhna road.
The late counselor, born in Gharbia Governorate in 1946 and a graduate of the Faculty of Sharia and Law at Al-Azhar, is considered one of the most prominent and influential judicial figures in the Egyptian legal scene. He led the Judges Club of Egypt during a critical period in 2009 and was re-elected in 2012, with his name being associated with the defense of judicial independence and its personnel.
His professional career culminated in his appointment as Minister of Justice in May 2015, and he remained in his executive position until March 2016, during a period marked by numerous judicial files and major media debates that have remained present in the political and legal memory.
