Ultra-processed foods are increasingly present in the daily diet, from ready meals to certain baked goods, beverages, and manufactured products. Scientific studies are scrutinizing them due to the association of excessive consumption with a range of health risks.
A medical review, based on 45 analyses involving approximately 9.9 million participants, revealed that higher consumption of ultra-processed foods is linked to multiple negative health outcomes, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other disorders.
Researchers noted a variation in the strength of evidence among health outcomes, while a large proportion of the available data relies on observational studies, meaning that correlation alone does not prove that these foods are a direct cause of all those issues.
Nutrition experts believe that the approach should not involve classifying all manufactured products in the same way, but rather reducing reliance on highly processed foods, while promoting the presence of vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and less processed foods in daily meals.
Moderation and the overall quality of the diet remain the most important factors in daily choices.
