In a unique event that has astonished social media users around the world, a Japanese company announced the launch of the strangest challenge to reward the laziest and most professional sleepers, as dozens prepare to compete in Tokyo on October 5 for a massive cash prize of 2.22 million yen (about $15,000), just for taking a deep nap.
The competition, named "Mattress Race by Koala," attracts about 20 competitors in each round of 3 races that take place between noon and 7 PM, igniting unprecedented excitement to reach the silent throne.
The rules do not rely on claims or luck, but rather place competitors in front of highly accurate measuring devices to track sleep quality on advanced mattresses designed by the organizing company:
- Biometric indicators: Each participant is allocated 90 minutes, during which medical devices monitor the speed of falling asleep, its depth, and the stability of sleep without disturbances.
- Standardized points: A specialized medical committee intervenes to compile these indicators into a final score that announces the identity of the biggest winner in first place.
- Record-breaking prizes: The rewards exceed the grand prize to include exceptional categories, such as "Deepest Sleeper" and "Strangest Sleeping Position in the Hall."
However, the race will not be a bed of roses, as the organizers intend to create "sudden sleep disturbances" inside the hall to test the competitors' stability, in addition to everyone undergoing warm-up exercises before the start.
Despite the flood of sarcastic suggestions online to stay up for long nights or use sleeping pills to secure victory, the organizing committee has imposed a strict ban on intentional sleep deprivation or the use of any pharmaceutical aids.
To qualify for the competition, participants must be at least 20 years old, in full medical fitness, and agree to biometric data analysis, with registration officially closing on September 16.
