An Ohio court has convicted former attorney Matthew Ekston, 43, of attempted murder and aggravated assault after he attempted to shoot his ex-wife, Kada Malone, inside a restaurant in Toledo, in a horrific incident captured by surveillance cameras.
The details of the incident date back to April 11, 2025, when Ekston saw his ex-wife having dinner with her parents at an Italian restaurant. After initially provocative behavior, he left the place only to return carrying a firearm, heading straight towards her, then aimed the gun at her head from close range and pulled the trigger.
According to what was reported by "Fox News," the bullet did not fire due to the safety mechanism being engaged, despite there being one bullet in the chamber and seven other bullets in the magazine.
In the following moments, a restaurant employee intervened, managed to take Ekston down to the ground, and wrested the weapon from him before he had the chance to use it again.
Lucas County Prosecutor Julia Beitz stated that Ekston went to the restaurant with the intent to carry out what she described as a "public execution" of his ex-wife, praising the quick intervention of the staff and customers who prevented a disaster. He was also convicted of aggravated assault charges against Malone's parents, who were with her during the incident.
The final arguments session was not without a dramatic scene, as Ekston was removed from the courtroom following a hysterical outburst. During the incident, he repeated lyrics from a Johnny Cash song that he had previously sent to his ex-wife in what was considered a threat to her, before making a hand gesture resembling a gun towards the deputy prosecutor.
The court is scheduled to issue its final ruling against Ekston on September 21, 2026, as he faces prison time for the attempted murder, along with charges related to weapon possession and assault.
