In an extraordinary scene that takes the breath away from travelers and drivers and turns traditional aviation rules into a living legend, hundreds of cars and buses suddenly stop in front of a red traffic light and strict security barriers, not due to a traffic accident or maintenance work, but to make way for a massive aircraft crossing the main road, preparing for takeoff or landing.
This is not a scene from a fantasy film; it is a magical reality experienced at Gibraltar International Airport, the only facility in the world where its main runway directly intersects with a busy main street connecting the peninsula to the Spanish border.
This strange design is due to very specific geographical and historical circumstances, as the Gibraltar Peninsula is a narrow and rugged strip that does not exceed two kilometers in width in some areas, dominated by the giant Rock of Gibraltar, which rises over 400 meters.
- Born from the womb of war: The airport was established during World War II on a narrow flat area that was used as a horse racing field, only 800 meters long.
- Reclaimed from the sea: With the evolution of aviation and the need to accommodate large passenger aircraft, parts of the sea were filled in to extend the runway to 1,660 meters, forcing the main street to intersect with the heart of the runway due to the lack of any other geographical option.
As soon as the aircraft approaches landing or prepares for takeoff, the control devices turn the traffic lights on the street red, and the iron barriers are fully lowered, bringing all traffic to a halt and transforming the car crossing area into part of the runway.
And because the jet engines of the aircraft are highly sensitive, the road is not reopened immediately after the aircraft passes; instead, inspection crews disembark to thoroughly scan the runway and clean it of any debris that could harm the tires and engines, which may extend to a wait of 20 or 30 minutes under the watchful eyes of drivers and tourists eager to take photos.
Despite its constant classification in documentaries as one of the "strangest and most dangerous airports in the world" due to the strong winds surrounding the rock, aviation authorities confirm that operations are conducted safely and to the highest standards, while a tunnel project has been established beneath the runway to alleviate traffic pressure and end the strangest intersection between vehicle and aircraft movements in history.
