لقي شخصان مصرعهما وأصيب 90 آخرون بحالات اختناق، إثر تسرب غاز الأمونيا من معمل للأسمدة في منطقة خور الزبير بمحافظة البصرة جنوبي العراق.
وقال قائم مقام قضاء الزبير عباس ماهر إن حالات الاختناق شملت عاملين في المعمل ومواطنين من المناطق المحيطة، مشيراً إلى أن معظم الحالات كانت بسيطة وغادر أصحابها المستشفى، فيما نُقلت حالات أخرى إلى مستشفى الزبير لمتابعة أوضاعها الصحية.
وتمكنت فرق الدفاع المدني من السيطرة على التسرب وإخلاء المعمل بالكامل، وإخراج جميع العاملين الذين كانوا عالقين داخله، فيما أكدت السلطات المحلية أن الوضع بات تحت السيطرة.
ووجّه وزير الصناعة والمعادن العراقي محمد نوري بتشكيل لجنة وزارية للتحقيق في أسباب تسرب غاز الأمونيا داخل مصنع سماد اليوريا التابع للشركة العامة لصناعة الأسمدة الجنوبية في محافظة البصرة، والوقوف على ملابسات الحادث.
ولم تعلن السلطات العراقية حتى الآن السبب الذي أدى إلى تسرب الغاز، فيما تواصل الجهات المختصة متابعة الحادث.
Two people lost their lives and 90 others suffered from asphyxiation due to an ammonia gas leak from a fertilizer plant in the Khour Al-Zubair area of Basra province in southern Iraq.
The district commissioner of Al-Zubair, Abbas Maher, stated that the cases of asphyxiation included workers at the plant and residents from the surrounding areas, noting that most cases were mild and their owners left the hospital, while other cases were transferred to Al-Zubair Hospital for further monitoring of their health conditions.
Civil defense teams managed to control the leak and evacuate the entire plant, rescuing all workers who were trapped inside, while local authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control.
Iraqi Minister of Industry and Minerals, Mohammed Nouri, directed the formation of a ministerial committee to investigate the causes of the ammonia gas leak inside the urea fertilizer plant belonging to the Southern General Company for Fertilizer Industry in Basra province, and to look into the circumstances of the incident.
So far, Iraqi authorities have not announced the reason that led to the gas leak, while relevant agencies continue to monitor the incident.
