Psychologists have confirmed that tantrums and impulsive behaviors in children are a natural part of developmental stages, and they can often be a means of expressing feelings or needs that the child cannot articulate in words.
Experts explained that parents' responses to these situations in a calm and thoughtful manner can help the child develop their ability to understand and regulate their emotions, enhancing their emotional intelligence and ability to cope with future challenges.
According to a report published by the American network "CNBC," psychologist Julie Fraga identified five steps to help parents contain and effectively deal with tantrums.
The first step is for the father or mother to remain calm before attempting to soothe the child, as children are influenced by adults' reactions and derive their sense of security from them. Deep and measured breathing can alleviate tension and help manage the situation more balanced.
The second step involves looking for the real reason behind the behavior, rather than merely resorting to reprimands or punishment. For instance, lying may be linked to fear, while rejecting certain rules may reflect the child's desire to feel independent.
The third step emphasizes the importance of helping the child name and describe their feelings, whether they are feeling angry, sad, or anxious, as this contributes to enhancing their ability to understand and manage their emotions in a healthy way.
In the fourth step, experts advise parents to review their own behavior and how they handle emotions, as children tend to mimic what they see at home and consider their parents the primary model for dealing with different situations.
The fifth step relates to paying attention to the stresses and needs that may be behind the tantrum, such as hunger, fatigue, or feelings of loneliness, as providing comfort, attention, and spending enjoyable time with the child can help reduce these behaviors.
Experts believe that tantrums should not be treated merely as annoying behavior, but rather as a message that may reveal unexpressed feelings or needs, emphasizing that understanding and addressing them calmly and empathetically helps the child build stronger and more stable emotional capabilities.
