The absent was the most present of all.. Thus went the night of Mohammed Zayed Al-Alma'i in Jeddah, when his friends and companions of the word gathered around his biography and poetry, recalling faces of the human, the poet, and the intellectual, in the evening "You and I Alone" organized by the Cultural and Arts Association in Jeddah.
Between the south that remained present in Al-Alma'i's memory, and the poem that carried many features of the place, the media figure Saad Zuhair opened a window on the poet's relationship with his southern environment and its impact on his intellectual and poetic formation, along with the connection to place and people that accompanied his experience.
When the conversation shifted to Dr. Hamoud Abu Talib, friendship took precedence over biography. Many years of knowledge and positions allowed Abu Talib to recall the image of Al-Alma'i the human, his relationships with intellectuals, and the stances that remained in the memory of his friends, while he was overcome with emotion as he recalled a companion whose journey was intertwined with vast spaces of life and culture.
The poet and novelist Abdullah Thabit chose to evoke Al-Alma'i from within his text, reading several of his poems, discussing his literary experience and the collection "You and I Alone," and the story of its publication, stopping at several features that shaped his poetic project.
Paris in Al-Alma'i's Memory
The contributions from the audience opened other windows on the life of the late; Dr. Mujahed Al-Zahrani recalled a part of Al-Alma'i's relationship with Paris and what it represented in his experience and cultural memory, while novelist Abdu Khal spoke about the difficulty of discussing friends when the loss is close to the heart, recalling his relationship with Al-Alma'i and the impact their friendship left behind.
Novelist Nabila Mahjoub called for more attention to be given to creators, illuminating their experiences and introducing generations to their achievements, emphasizing the importance of keeping cultural symbols and their experiences present in cultural memory.
Poet Mohammed Abu Sharara, Dr. Youssef Al-Aref, Dr. Abdullah Al-Araj, and Dr. Saleh Al-Shadi also participated with contributions that added testimonies and memories about the late, expanding the evening from a recollection of a poetic experience to a reading of the human, his relationships, and his presence among his peers.
At the end of the evening, the director of the Cultural and Arts Association in Jeddah, Mohammed Al-Sobaih, honored Dr. Hamoud Abu Talib, poet and novelist Abdullah Thabit, and media figure Saad Zuhair with Arabic calligraphy panels created by calligrapher Abdulrahman Al-Mu'allim. He also presented a commemorative plaque to the family of the late on behalf of the association and Dar Nashir, in tribute to his literary and cultural journey.
The attendees left the night of "You and I Alone," with the biography of Mohammed Zayed Al-Alma'i distributed among poetry, testimony, and the memory of a friend, while his name remained present in the stories told by his companions, and in texts that continue to extend the life of their poet after his absence.
