In a groundbreaking judicial decision that shook the political and economic circles, the Moroccan court in Fes has put an end to a dark chapter of manipulation of public funds, after issuing prison sentences and hefty fines against the president of the regional council of Taza and a wide network of contractors involved with him in cases of tax fraud and cross-sector forgery.
The court did not hesitate to resolve the complicated case, sentencing the main accused "A.B." to actual imprisonment, while obliging him to pay an amount exceeding 15.8 million dirhams as a tax debt owed to the state treasury, in addition to civil compensation and the complete destruction of all forged invoices used to deceive the public finances.
The judicial blow did not stop at the mastermind, but also extended to five other accused members of the network (including a prominent official's brother) with varying prison sentences and financial fines, while charges against the remaining suspects were dropped after confirming their lack of direct involvement.
It can be said that this judicial resolution brings down the curtain on one of the heaviest cases of forgery and financial corruption that has recently occupied the Arab street and public opinion, reinforcing a stern message that occupational exploitation and manipulation of state funds will not go unpunished.
