Pyramids FC midfielder Nasser Maher did not realize that a hand touch outside the green pitch would cost him facing one of the toughest nightmares of his career; as the security pursuit ended with his arrest and a court ruling against him that mandates six months of imprisonment with hard labor.
In dramatic moments that held the breath of Egyptian football fans, the player transformed from preparing for matches to being led away in handcuffs under heavy guard to the public prosecutor's office, after being stopped by security forces in the heart of New Cairo based on explicit judicial orders.
The roots of the incident trace back to a hot night at one of the upscale residential compounds in the First Settlement area, where a sudden altercation broke out between Nasser Maher and the security guard assigned to protect the place, escalating within seconds into a direct physical assault.
Although the medical report for the victim confirmed minor injuries that required treatment not exceeding 20 days, the Egyptian Penal Code was vigilant, as Article 242 stipulates punishing the assailant even if the assault was with "a single punch" that does not leave a visible wound, turning the quick altercation into an official assault crime that directly referred the player to trial.
The player's shock doubled when the New Cairo Court issued its strict absentia ruling sentencing him to six months in prison, along with imposing a temporary civil compensation for the security guard amounting to 101,000 Egyptian pounds.
Since the player did not file an appeal within the specified time, the victim's lawyer exploited the loophole and made a sensational move by submitting an urgent report to the public prosecutor (number 1501044), demanding the immediate arrest of the football star and his official listing on the watch and travel ban lists, which placed the player in a predicament of sports and legal prohibition.
Following the police action and the issuance of his arrest warrant, Nasser Maher found himself before the competent prosecutor, where his defense team quickly moved to take comprehensive "opposition" measures against the absentia ruling to halt the strict execution.
As a result of the appeal, the prosecutor decided to temporarily release the player, while referring the entire file to the court, which reserved the case for the final ruling.
