After three decades of friendship that began in their teenage years, two Indian women living in Europe discovered that they are biological sisters, having been adopted by different families in the Netherlands without either knowing the truth about the bond that connects them.
Mina Giltinck and Minal Tissen were born in the early 1980s in Mumbai and were adopted by two Dutch families from different orphanages just a few months after their birth. Despite growing up in neighboring cities, there were no indications of a familial connection between them, until they were brought together by an event organized by the adoption agency that their parents dealt with, where they noticed a striking resemblance in their features and behaviors.
Mina, now 43 years old, clearly remembers that first meeting, saying she couldn’t stop looking at Minal during dinner, while their friends commented on the significant similarity between them. The two girls exchanged phone numbers, and a close relationship developed over the years, to the point that they began addressing each other as "sister" despite the lack of evidence to support it.
They shared the same interests, from sports to music, and wrote to each other about school, friends, and their daily lives, before communication ceased 15 years ago due to Minal moving to France and Mina becoming busy raising her first child.
In 2017, Mina took a DNA test but found no matches, and later deleted the app. However, last May, she received a surprising message from Minal via Facebook asking if she still remembered her. Minal had taken a similar test weeks earlier and sent Mina a picture of her results.
Mina reinstalled the app while feeling extremely anxious, only to discover that the result showed a 100% match, meaning they are sisters from the same mother and father. Mina says the moment was "like an adrenaline rush," and she cried because she found the missing piece of her life.
Last August, they met for the first time since discovering the truth, in a meeting filled with tears, laughter, and hugs, before taking their first selfie together as sisters. Minal, who lives in France, says she initially didn’t realize that the match was with the girl she had bonded with 30 years ago, and she felt that everything had finally fallen into place.
Mina confirms that the meeting restored a deep sense of completeness to her, and the emptiness they had lived with for so many years began to fade, after they discovered that the bond they felt since their teenage years was not just a coincidence, but a true blood relationship that had remained hidden for many years.
