Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Jeddah has announced its joining the Global Sepsis Alliance as a Founding Pilot Partner in the pilot phase to develop and internationally validate the GSA global program for hospital accreditation in sepsis care (septicemia), in a move that reflects the hospital's ongoing commitment to patient safety, quality of care, and clinical excellence.
This announcement coincides with World Sepsis Day 2026, as the Global Sepsis Alliance launches the program development and international validation phase, aiming to create a global framework that helps hospitals build reliable and integrated systems for sepsis prevention, early recognition, timely therapeutic intervention, recovery monitoring, outcome measurement, and continuous quality improvement.
Sepsis is one of the most significant challenges in global health, with data indicating approximately 48.9 million cases annually and over 11 million deaths worldwide. Despite the availability of evidence-based international clinical guidelines, their consistent and reliable application at the hospital level as an integrated system remains a global challenge.
Therefore, the program goes beyond focusing on individual therapeutic interventions to comprehensively assess the hospital care system, including leadership and governance, early detection and clinical escalation, diagnostic capabilities, prudent antibiotic use, resuscitation and critical care, infection source control, infection prevention, staff efficiency, data and outcome measurement, patient and family engagement, post-sepsis recovery, and continuous quality improvement.
From Standards to Application in Real Care Environments
During the development phase, the Global Sepsis Alliance is working with a limited international group of hospitals selected as Founding Pilot Partners to represent different health systems and regions around the world.
Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital in Jeddah will contribute to testing the proposed standards in a real clinical environment, and the pilot phase will include structured self-assessment, evidence review, patient and system pathway tracking, data verification, multidisciplinary interviews, and systematic feedback on the standards and evaluation methodology. The results of this phase will contribute to the development of the final standards and accreditation methodology before the global launch of the program.
This participation gives the hospital an opportunity to directly contribute to shaping and developing future international standards for sepsis care, while also benefiting from the evaluation and learning process to enhance internal care systems, measure performance, identify improvement opportunities, and support better patient outcomes.
The Vice President of the Global Sepsis Alliance and Chair of the Sepsis Alliance for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Abdulilah Al-Hosawi, stated:
“Our ambition is to develop a rigorous, practical, and internationally applicable framework that helps hospitals transition from individual excellence to achieving integrated institutional reliability in sepsis care. By testing these standards in real care environments with partners like Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital, we can ensure that the final program contributes to measurable improvements, not just compliance with administrative requirements.”
For his part, Dr. Mazen Al Faqih, Chairman of Al Faqih Healthcare Group, said: “Our participation as a Founding Pilot Partner in the Global Sepsis Alliance program's pilot phase extends Al Faqih Group's ongoing commitment to enhancing patient safety and quality of care according to the highest international standards. This partnership is particularly significant as it allows us to move from applying global best practices to directly contributing to their development and testing. Through the expertise of our clinical teams and our quality system, we look forward to contributing to building a practical and reliable global framework that can enhance sepsis patient care and improve health outcomes both nationally and internationally.”
An Extension of a Journey of Quality and Excellence
This partnership extends Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital's journey in quality, patient safety, and clinical excellence, which has been crowned with several prestigious recognitions and accreditations, including the hospital receiving the gold level in patient safety from the Saudi Patient Safety Center, the Planetree Gold Certification for excellence in person-centered care, and its classification by Newsweek as the best private hospital in Saudi Arabia for five consecutive years.
The hospital has also strengthened its position in specialized care by accrediting 14 centers of excellence across various surgical specialties, reflecting the strength and integration of the quality, patient safety, and clinical excellence system within the hospital.
The current participation with the Global Sepsis Alliance adds a new dimension to this journey; it is not limited to applying existing global standards but allows the hospital to contribute to the development and testing of a new international framework that can help shape the future of sepsis care globally.
The Global Sepsis Alliance aims, through the program, to build a global network for learning and improvement, enabling hospitals to measure their performance, identify gaps, share knowledge and best practices, and continuously enhance their capabilities in sepsis prevention, recognition, treatment, and supporting patient recovery after sepsis.
The GSA program for hospital accreditation in sepsis care is targeted for official international launch in the first quarter of 2027, following the completion of development, pilot testing, international validation, and approvals related to program governance.
