Cortisol is one of the most important hormones released by the body during stress, playing a pivotal role in energy regulation and stress response. However, chronic elevation of cortisol may complicate weight loss efforts, as confirmed by endocrinology specialists.
Despite the widespread use of the term "cortisol imbalance" on social media, Dr. Maria Teresa Anton from the "Pritikin Longevity Center" clarifies that this description is not an officially recognized medical diagnosis, but rather a result of inaccurate information, emphasizing that many patients are misled by this idea.
Experts point out that cortisol levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day, but continuous stress, lack of sleep, and anxiety can raise these levels to a point where a person becomes more susceptible to excessive hunger and fat storage, particularly in the abdominal area. Dr. Andres Splenser from (Memorial Hermann Hospital) states that prolonged exposure to elevated cortisol may be associated with weight gain, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Anton explains that cortisol affects metabolism, driving the body to prefer high-calorie foods and promoting fat storage, while also potentially weakening the body's ability to use insulin efficiently, which increases the likelihood of weight gain. Signs that may indicate elevated cortisol include increased abdominal fat, fatigue, muscle weakness, difficulty concentrating, as well as skin changes and headaches in more severe cases.
Doctors differentiate between temporary cortisol elevation due to stress and the continuous overproduction of it within the body, which necessitates blood, saliva, and urine tests to assess the condition. Temporary elevation can be managed through lifestyle adjustments without the need for medical examination.
Specialists confirm that balancing cortisol levels relies on simple yet effective steps, such as getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, adopting relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation, in addition to consuming a balanced diet rich in antioxidants. They also emphasize the importance of stress management through setting personal boundaries and seeking support when needed.
Anton believes that cortisol is not the only factor affecting weight, but rather part of a complex system that includes genetics, metabolism, and daily habits. Nevertheless, managing stress and cortisol levels, along with a healthy lifestyle, can help improve the ability to lose weight and enhance overall health.
