In the midst of the shock that followed the historic verdict sentencing Egyptian journalist and producer Sara Khalifa to death alongside 11 other defendants, everyone thought that the curtain had completely fallen on the most controversial case in Egyptian society, and that death was merely a matter of time.
However, behind the scenes of this judicial decision that shook the arts and media circles, a stunning surprise looms, revealed by legal expert Amr Abdel Salam, confirming that "the gallows are still far away, and the story is not over yet!"
The legal expert stated that the death sentence issued by the Cairo Criminal Court is not a final or immediately executable decision, but rather a ruling from a "first-degree court," which opens up successive defense fronts for the lawyers on the media figure's defense team that could turn the scales upside down:
- Appeals Court: The first line of defense that allows for the reopening of the entire case files and the issuance of a new ruling that could reduce the penalty or annul it based on the new convictions of the judicial panel.
- Supreme Court: The last refuge that scrutinizes severe observations and procedures, and if there is any formal or procedural flaw, the death sentence is immediately annulled and the trial is restarted.
According to Egyptian legislation, the available appeal procedures compel the authorities to automatically suspend the execution of the death sentence until a final ruling is issued that completely closes the case.
These developments come after one of the most complex cases, where the famous media figure transformed from media platforms and lights to the main accused within a criminal gang that included 28 defendants, who operated a secret den within a residential building to manufacture, supply, and store over 750 kilograms of narcotic substances for trafficking, supported by unlicensed firearms.
Despite desperate attempts to appeal to the head of the court during the sessions and talk about her suffering from cancer, the mufti's decision upheld the death penalty against her along with 12 defendants, while life sentences were issued for nine others, and acquittals for seven defendants, with comprehensive seizure of funds and bank accounts, leaving the lingering question now: Will the upcoming appeal succeed in saving Sara Khalifa from the noose at the last moment?
