India recorded the highest average temperatures for August last month since the beginning of climate data collection in 1901, indicating a continued rise in temperatures and the country's exposure to drier climatic conditions during the monsoon season.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the average temperature in the country reached 28.01 degrees Celsius in August, exceeding the normal average for the month by about 0.67 degrees Celsius.
This surpassed the previous record set in August 2023, when the average temperatures were 28 degrees Celsius.
Data from the meteorological department showed that monsoon rains in India decreased by 16% in August compared to normal levels, contributing to the rise in temperatures, noting that the "El Niño" phenomenon was one of the factors that partially contributed to these climatic conditions.
"El Niño" is a natural climatic phenomenon that affects wind patterns, atmospheric pressure, and rainfall around the world, and is often associated in India and Southeast Asia with drier conditions and higher temperatures.
These developments come at a time when India, which has the largest population in the world, is facing increasing impacts from rising temperatures, with severe heatwaves recorded in various regions of the country in recent years.
Climate scientists believe that climate change contributes to the increasing frequency and intensity of record heatwaves, making the rise in temperatures during the hottest months an escalating challenge for India and its inhabitants.
