As human exploration of Mars approaches, the American space agency "NASA" is moving towards developing the necessary infrastructure to support future missions, primarily communication and navigation systems. In this context, the agency has selected "Blue Origin" to develop a next-generation communication network around the Red Planet.
The maximum value of the contract is approximately $700 million, with "Blue Origin" tasked with delivering a high-performance orbital vehicle dedicated to communications around Mars, no later than December 31, 2028.
The company's responsibilities include designing, developing, and integrating the communication network, as well as launching and operating it. The orbital vehicle will work to transmit scientific data, images, navigation information, and communications between space missions operating on the surface of Mars or in its vicinity.
This project is part of NASA's efforts to expand space communication and navigation services beyond Earth and the Moon, supporting current and future robotic missions to Mars, and enabling the transfer of larger amounts of data with higher reliability.
As part of the "Artemis" program, NASA continues to develop its capabilities for lunar exploration and sending astronauts there, considering this a preliminary step towards future missions to Mars, while robotic missions contribute to gathering information and testing the technologies needed for exploring the Red Planet.
The new communication network is expected to be operational in the vicinity of Mars by 2030, forming part of the infrastructure that future space missions to the planet will rely on.
