دخلت عمليات الإنقاذ في النيبال يومها الخامس وسط ارتفاع كبير في حصيلة ضحايا الفيضانات والانهيارات الطينية التي ضربت المناطق الشمالية المتاخمة للصين، إذ أعلنت السلطات (الأحد) أن عدد القتلى بلغ 734 شخصًا، فيما لا يزال نحو 2500 في عداد المفقودين؛ وفق بيانات هيئة إدارة الحالات الطارئة.
وتشير الأرقام إلى أن الكارثة التي بدأت الأربعاء الماضي، خلّفت دمارًا واسعًا في مناطق الهيمالايا، بينما رفعت الصين حصيلتها إلى 16 قتيلًا و546 مفقودًا، ما يرفع إجمالي الضحايا في البلدين إلى 750 قتيلًا وأكثر من 3044 مفقودًا.
وفي بيان منفصل، أفادت السلطات الصينية بأن 261 أجنبيًا من 23 دولة مفقودون في منطقة التبت قرب المعبر الحدودي مع النيبال، بعد أن اجتاح انهيار طيني ضخم المنطقة الجبلية.
وحذّرت نيبال فرق الإنقاذ من ارتفاع منسوب مياه الفيضانات في نهر بوتيكوشي بإقليم راسوا، مؤكدة تلقيها تقارير عن «تزايد مستمر في تدفق المياه»، وداعية العاملين في البحث والإغاثة وسكان المناطق المحاذية للنهر إلى اتخاذ أعلى درجات الحيطة، خصوصًا في راسوا ونواكوت ودادينغ وتشيتوان.
وفي تطور لافت، كشفت هيئة المسح الجيولوجي الأمريكية أن الفيضانات نجمت عن انهيار جليدي تسبب في نشاط زلزالي، موضحةً أن الحدث سُجّل في البداية على أنه زلزال بقوة 4.4 درجة، قبل أن يتبين لاحقًا أنه «تدفّق ركام جليدي» أدى إلى موجة فيضانات كارثية باتجاه مجرى النهر.
وتواصل السلطات في البلدين جهود البحث وسط ظروف ميدانية صعبة، فيما تتوقع الجهات المختصة ارتفاع الأعداد مع استمرار عمليات الانتشال في المناطق المعزولة.
The rescue operations in Nepal entered their fifth day amid a significant rise in the death toll from the floods and landslides that struck the northern regions bordering China. Authorities announced on Sunday that the number of dead has reached 734, while around 2,500 are still missing, according to data from the Emergency Management Agency.
The figures indicate that the disaster, which began last Wednesday, has caused widespread destruction in the Himalayan regions, while China has raised its toll to 16 dead and 546 missing, bringing the total casualties in both countries to 750 dead and more than 3,044 missing.
In a separate statement, Chinese authorities reported that 261 foreigners from 23 countries are missing in the Tibet region near the border crossing with Nepal, after a massive landslide swept through the mountainous area.
Nepal has warned rescue teams of the rising floodwaters in the Bhote Koshi River in the Rasuwa district, confirming that it has received reports of a "continuous increase in water flow," urging search and relief workers and residents in the areas adjacent to the river to take maximum precautions, especially in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dadhing, and Chitwan.
In a notable development, the U.S. Geological Survey revealed that the floods resulted from a glacial collapse that triggered seismic activity, explaining that the event was initially recorded as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake before it was later determined to be a "glacial debris flow" that led to catastrophic flooding along the river's course.
Authorities in both countries continue their search efforts amid challenging field conditions, while relevant agencies expect the numbers to rise as recovery operations continue in isolated areas.
