في واحدة من أبشع الجرائم الأسرية التي هزت الرأي العام الأمريكي وتجردت فيها الإنسانية من أدنى معاني الأمومة، أقدمت الأم مادلين فيرونيك دالي (36 عاماً) على كتابة النهاية المأساوية لحياة طفلها الرضيع باسيل ستونر (11 شهراً) بدم بارد، لمنع والده من الحصول على حق الحضانة.
القصة التي تفاعلت معها وسائل الإعلام الأمريكية بذهول، كشفت تحول نزاع قضائي بين الأبوين حول حقوق الرؤية والتنقل إلى مطاردة أمنية ممتدة عبر عدة ولايات، انتهت بجريمة صادمة داخل كرفان مسكون في أعماق ولاية نيو مكسيكو.
وبدأت الدراما الإجرامية عندما امتنعت الأم عن الحضور لجلسات المحكمة الصادرة في ولاية وايومنغ، ليقرر القاضي منح الأب جيك ستونر الحضانة الطارئة ورعاية الطفل. وحينها، حزمت الأم أمتعتها وخطفت الرضيع لتبدأ رحلة التواري عن الأنظار:
سقوط القناع: ظلت المتهمة تتنقل بين كرفانات ومواقع نائية لأسابيع حتى قررت التقدم لطلب عمل بمدينة «سيلفر سيتي».

وأقرت المتهمة بالذنب رسمياً في تهمة القتل العمد من الدرجة الأولى لتفادي المحاكمة الجنائية المفتوحة، لتواجه عقوبة السجن مدى الحياة مع عدم إمكانية الإفراج المشروط إلا بعد قضائها 30 عاماً على الأقل خلف الأسوار.

Criminal check: During a background check by the employer, the system revealed an outstanding warrant and a notice for her arrest on charges of child kidnapping, and authorities were immediately notified.
