شهدت ولاية مونتانا الأمريكية واحدة من أكثر الحوادث العائلية دموية هذا العام، بعدما أقدم رجل على قتل ثمانية من أفراد أسرته؛ بينهم أربعة أطفال، قبل أن يضع حدًا لحياته.
وأكدت جنيفر ميرسر، المتحدثة باسم العائلة، أن الجريمة وقعت خلال مأدبة عشاء جمعت أربعة أجيال من الأسرة، من طفلة في السابعة إلى جدة تجاوزت التسعين.
وبحسب رواية العائلة، أطلق الجاني آلان سميث (44 عامًا) النار على والديه وجدته المُقعدة وشقيقته وطفليها، إضافة إلى طفلي زوج زوجته السابقة، ثم أشعل النار في المنزل قبل أن ينتحر. ووصلت الشرطة إلى الموقع بعد بلاغ عن إطلاق نار، لتجد المنزل وقد التهمته النيران بالكامل، وتؤكد لاحقًا العثور على جثث الضحايا والجاني الذي توفي متأثرًا بإصابته الذاتية.

ونقلت وكالة (أسوشيتد برس) عن براد آيرلاند، والد اثنين من الأطفال القتلى، أن سميث كان يعيش مع والديه قبل أن يطلبا منه المغادرة، وبعد أسبوعين عاد إلى المنزل أثناء اجتماع العائلة لتناول العشاء، وفتح النار على الجميع دون سابق إنذار. وكانت زوجة آيرلاند السابقة، ميغان غيكير، وطفلاهما أوين (13 عامًا) وشلوي (7 سنوات) ضمن الضحايا، إلى جانب طفلي زوج ميغان الحالي، لاندون (15 عامًا) وتشارلوت (12 عامًا).
وتشير العائلة إلى أن الطفلة تشارلوت حاولت الاتصال بالطوارئ لإنقاذ أفراد أسرتها قبل أن تُقتل، ووصفتها ميرسر بأنها «بطلة صغيرة حاولت إنقاذ الجميع».
تصاعد في جرائم العنف الأسري
وبحسب قاعدة بيانات مشتركة بين (أسوشيتد برس) وصحيفة (يو إس إيه توداي) وجامعة (نورث إيسترن)، تُعد هذه الجريمة حادثة القتل الجماعي رقم 22 في الولايات المتحدة منذ بداية العام، فيما تشير البيانات إلى أن 15 من هذه الحوادث مرتبطة بنزاعات أسرية، وهي نسبة أعلى من المتوسط المعتاد البالغ نحو 50%.
وتُصنف مأساة مونتانا بأنها الأكثر دموية منذ حادثة أبريل الماضي في ولاية لويزيانا، حين قتل رجل ثمانية أطفال، سبعة منهم من أبنائه، في واقعة مشابهة.
The state of Montana in the United States witnessed one of the deadliest family incidents this year, after a man killed eight of his family members, including four children, before taking his own life.
Jennifer Mercer, the family spokesperson, confirmed that the crime occurred during a dinner gathering that included four generations of the family, from a seven-year-old girl to a grandmother in her nineties.
According to the family's account, the perpetrator, Alan Smith (44 years old), shot his parents, his disabled grandmother, his sister and her two children, in addition to the two children of his ex-wife's current husband, before setting the house on fire and then committing suicide. The police arrived at the scene after a report of gunfire, only to find the house completely engulfed in flames, later confirming the discovery of the bodies of the victims and the perpetrator, who died from his self-inflicted injuries.
Details of the Night of Tragedy
The Associated Press reported that Brad Ireland, the father of two of the deceased children, stated that Smith had been living with his parents before they asked him to leave. After two weeks, he returned home during a family dinner gathering and opened fire on everyone without warning. Ireland's ex-wife, Megan Geiger, and their children Owen (13 years old) and Chloe (7 years old) were among the victims, along with the two children of Megan's current husband, Landon (15 years old) and Charlotte (12 years old).
The family noted that the little girl Charlotte tried to call emergency services to save her family members before she was killed, and Mercer described her as a "little hero who tried to save everyone."
Rise in Domestic Violence Crimes
According to a joint database between the Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University, this crime marks the 22nd mass shooting incident in the United States since the beginning of the year, with data indicating that 15 of these incidents are related to family disputes, a rate higher than the usual average of around 50%.
The Montana tragedy is classified as the deadliest since the incident last April in Louisiana, when a man killed eight children, seven of whom were his own, in a similar occurrence.
