تعيش أسرة فني الطائرات البريطاني جورجي باكستون حالة من الحزن بعد وفاته عن عمر ناهز 23 عامًا، متأثرًا بإصابات بالغة في الرأس تعرض لها إثر انفجار وقع داخل خزان وقود طائرة في مطار هيثرو بالعاصمة البريطانية لندن.
وبحسب تقارير إعلامية بريطانية، كان جورجي، الذي عمل فنيًا للطائرات لدى شركة «فيرجن أتلانتيك» لمدة عامين، يشارك في فحص تسرب للوقود داخل طائرة من طراز بوينغ عندما وقع الانفجار في 11 يونيو الماضي.
وأصيب الشاب بإصابات خطيرة في الرأس والوجه والعنق، وخضع لعدد من العمليات الجراحية، قبل أن يتوفى في مستشفى سانت ماري بعد قضائه 27 يومًا في وحدة العناية المركزة.
زميله أنقذه من داخل الخزان
كان جورجي واحدًا من فنيين اثنين من «فيرجن أتلانتيك» يعملان على التحقيق في تسرب الوقود عندما وقع الانفجار.
ووفقًا للتفاصيل الواردة في التقرير، كان زميله موجودًا في جزء آخر من خزان الوقود ولم يُصب بأذى، وتمكن عقب الحادثة من إخراج جورجي من الخزان ونقله إلى درجات المنصة التي كان الفنيان يستخدمانها أثناء العمل.
وأظهر فحص الطب الشرعي، الذي أُجري بناءً على طلب الشرطة، أن جورجي تعرض لإصابة دماغية رضية شديدة، إلى جانب إصابات بالغة في منطقة الرأس والوجه.
تحقيق جنائي في الحادثة
وعقب الواقعة، فتحت شرطة العاصمة البريطانية تحقيقًا جنائيًا في الحادثة بالتعاون مع هيئة الصحة والسلامة التنفيذية البريطانية.
كما فُتح تحقيق قضائي في وفاة جورجي، قبل تعليقه إلى حين معرفة ما إذا كانت ستوجه اتهامات جنائية على خلفية الحادثة.
وكان جورجي قد بدأ مسيرته المهنية في مجال صيانة الطائرات قبل نحو عامين لدى «فيرجن أتلانتيك»، بعدما عمل سابقًا في الوظيفة نفسها لدى شركة «رايان إير».
«كان أمامه الكثير ليتطلع إليه»
وفي أعقاب وفاته، أطلقت أسرة جورجي حملة لجمع التبرعات تخليدًا لذكراه، ووصفت في رسالة مؤثرة ابنها الراحل بأنه «شاب طيب وذكي ومحب للآخرين»، مؤكدة أنه كان لا يزال في بداية حياته المهنية ولديه الكثير من الطموحات والمستقبل الذي يتطلع إليه.
وقالت والدته راشيل باكستون، في رسالة الحملة: «ابننا الجميل وشريك لوسيا، جورجي، كان يبلغ 23 عامًا فقط عندما تعرض لحادثة مأساوية أثناء العمل».
وأضافت الأسرة أن جورجي كان فخورًا للغاية بعمله فنيًا للطائرات، وأن مهنته عكست شغفه بالهندسة والطيران، مشيرة إلى أنه سرعان ما أصبح عضوًا محبوبًا ومحترمًا داخل فريق عمله.
27 يومًا في العناية المركزة
بعد الحادثة، أسهمت الاستجابة السريعة لفريق الإسعاف الجوي بلندن في نقل جورجي إلى المستشفى ومنحه فرصة للبقاء على قيد الحياة، وفقًا لعائلته.
وقضى الشاب 27 يومًا في وحدة العناية المركزة بمستشفى سانت ماري، حيث بذل الأطباء والممرضون وفريق العناية المركزة جهودًا كبيرة لإنقاذ حياته.
وقالت الأسرة إن الطاقم الطبي قدم رعاية استثنائية لجورجي، كما وقف إلى جانب أفراد أسرته خلال واحدة من أصعب الفترات في حياتهم.
لكن، وعلى الرغم من الجهود الطبية، كانت إصابات جورجي بالغة لدرجة لم يتمكن جسده من التعافي منها، ليفارق الحياة بعد 27 يومًا من العلاج في العناية المركزة.
تبرعات تكريمًا لذكراه
وقررت الأسرة توجيه التبرعات التي تجمعها الحملة إلى مؤسسة الإسعاف الجوي في لندن ووحدة العناية المركزة في مستشفى سانت ماري، تقديرًا للجهود التي بذلها العاملون في إنقاذ جورجي ورعايته.
وأكدت الأسرة أن مؤسسة الإسعاف الجوي في لندن تعتمد على التبرعات لمواصلة عملها في إنقاذ الأرواح، فيما تسعى وحدة العناية المركزة في مستشفى سانت ماري إلى جمع الأموال لتحسين مرافقها وتقديم دعم أفضل للعائلات التي تمر بظروف بالغة الصعوبة.
وقالت الأسرة إن جورجي «ملأ حياتهم بالحب والضحكات والفخر»، وإن حياته، رغم قصرها، تركت أثرًا سيبقى في ذاكرة كل من عرفه.
وبحسب آخر تحديث لصفحة جمع التبرعات، تمكنت الحملة من جمع 16,109 جنيهات إسترلينية من أصل هدف يبلغ 24 ألف جنيه إسترليني، في إطار مسعى الأسرة لتخليد ذكرى جورجي ودعم الجهات التي حاولت إنقاذ حياته.

The young man suffered serious injuries to his head, face, and neck, underwent several surgeries, and ultimately passed away at St. Mary’s Hospital after spending 27 days in the intensive care unit.
His colleague rescued him from inside the tank
Georgie was one of two technicians from Virgin Atlantic investigating the fuel leak when the explosion happened.
According to details in the report, his colleague was in another part of the fuel tank and was unharmed; he managed to pull Georgie out of the tank and transport him to the platform steps that the technicians were using while working.
A forensic examination, conducted at the request of the police, revealed that Georgie suffered a severe traumatic brain injury, along with significant injuries to the head and face.
Criminal investigation into the incident
Following the incident, the Metropolitan Police launched a criminal investigation in collaboration with the UK Health and Safety Executive.
A judicial inquiry into Georgie's death was also opened, pending a decision on whether criminal charges would be filed in connection with the incident.
Georgie had begun his career in aircraft maintenance about two years ago at Virgin Atlantic, having previously worked in the same role at Ryanair.
“He had so much to look forward to”
In the wake of his death, Georgie's family launched a fundraising campaign in his memory, describing their late son in a heartfelt message as “a kind, smart, and loving young man,” emphasizing that he was still at the beginning of his career and had many ambitions and a future ahead of him.
His mother, Rachel Paxton, stated in the campaign message: “Our beautiful son and Lucia's partner, Georgie, was only 23 years old when he suffered a tragic accident at work.”
The family added that Georgie was extremely proud of his work as an aircraft technician, and that his profession reflected his passion for engineering and aviation, noting that he quickly became a beloved and respected member of his team.
27 days in intensive care
After the incident, the quick response of the air ambulance team in London helped transport Georgie to the hospital and gave him a chance to survive, according to his family.
The young man spent 27 days in the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, where doctors, nurses, and the ICU team made significant efforts to save his life.
The family stated that the medical staff provided exceptional care for Georgie and stood by his family during one of the most difficult times in their lives.
However, despite the medical efforts, Georgie's injuries were so severe that his body could not recover, and he passed away after 27 days of treatment in the intensive care unit.
Donations in honor of his memory
The family decided to direct the donations raised by the campaign to the air ambulance service in London and the intensive care unit at St. Mary’s Hospital, in appreciation of the efforts made by those who worked to save and care for Georgie.
The family confirmed that the air ambulance service in London relies on donations to continue its life-saving work, while the ICU at St. Mary’s Hospital seeks to raise funds to improve its facilities and provide better support to families going through extremely difficult circumstances.
The family stated that Georgie “filled their lives with love, laughter, and pride,” and that his life, despite being short, left a mark that will remain in the memory of everyone who knew him.
According to the latest update on the fundraising page, the campaign has raised £16,109 of its £24,000 goal, as part of the family’s effort to honor Georgie's memory and support the organizations that tried to save his life.
