The Saudi Food and Drug Authority has approved the registration of the product "Ibrudomide" (Zinbexos) for the treatment of adult patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, as an additional treatment to "Daratumumab" and "Dexamethasone." The authority is the first regulatory body in the world to register this product.
Multiple myeloma is one of the blood cancers that arise in plasma cells within the bone marrow, which can lead to anemia, a decrease in white blood cell counts, weakened immunity, as well as kidney dysfunction and bone damage.
The authority reported that the product was previously designated under the promising drugs program; a step that reflects its efforts to facilitate access to innovative treatments for patients within the Kingdom. The product belongs to a modern therapeutic group known as "E3 Ligase Modulators," which works by stimulating the breakdown of proteins that contribute to the survival and growth of multiple myeloma cells, enhancing the immune system's ability to attack these cells.
It clarified that the approval for the registration of the product was based on the results of a pivotal phase three clinical study that included patients with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. The results showed that the use of "Ibrudomide" as an additional treatment alongside "Daratumumab" and "Dexamethasone" achieved a statistically significant improvement compared to the comparative treatment.
Clinical data indicated that the most prominent side effects of the product included a decrease in certain blood cell counts, which may increase the risk of infection or anemia, in addition to dizziness, nausea, and skin rash.
The Food and Drug Authority emphasized the necessity of using the product under specialized medical supervision, with regular monitoring of the clinical condition and blood test results, according to the approved leaflet.
This approval embodies the authority's commitment to supporting innovation in the healthcare sector and providing modern therapeutic options for patients, contributing to the improvement of healthcare quality, in line with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the programs of Saudi Vision 2030.
The authority confirmed that the promising drugs program is concerned with drugs that have completed clinical study phases, demonstrating promising efficacy and safety and a clear therapeutic effect in treating serious diseases. It contributes to accelerating the access of innovative treatments to patients, expanding available therapeutic options, and enabling early access to innovative drugs within a short timeframe, in line with the objectives of the Health Sector Transformation Program, one of the programs of Vision 2030. It invites those interested in knowing more details to refer to the guide for the promising drugs program available on the authority's website: https://sfda.gov.sa/en/regulations/89310.
