This morning, on the seventh of September 2025, I had an appointment with the city of Damascus along with a group of colleagues, invited by the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works to inaugurate several projects in Syria. Just a few meters from the airport, we faced the first scene of horrors that were unimaginable. Along the road from the airport to the hotel, the destruction was utterly horrific. When we were taken into one of the neighborhoods where the residents clung to their homes despite the devastation, curses were directed at all those who caused this immense humanitarian tragedy. No one can believe that a regime could do to its country what Bashar al-Assad and his gang have done; even if it were a barbaric army invading Syria, it might have been less cruel and hateful towards humans and places. Those scenes encapsulated the larger picture in the rest of Syria's cities and countryside, which had been bombarded with barrels of explosives and crawled over by tank tracks and their shells for 15 years, rendering Syria devoid of all elements of life.
I recalled those painful scenes as I watched yesterday's live broadcast from the Judicial Palace in Damascus, where the Criminal Court issued verdicts against several members of the gang stained with the blood of Syrians, including the fugitive president Bashar and his brother Maher, and the former head of the Political Security Branch in Daraa, Atef Najib, who killed and disappeared the children, men, and women who sparked the protests in March 2011, and humiliated the dignity of those who said "no" to oppression and tyranny. The Syrian people, after the end of the Assad family's rule and their gang, awaited the realization of transitional justice and retribution against the criminals. Oceans of blood were shed, and countless numbers of displaced persons and refugees suffered in camps of heat, cold, hunger, and thirst, all for the sake of that gang maintaining control over Syria. However, divine justice had another decision, and earthly justice began to be implemented yesterday. It is true that the dead do not return, and the deep pains will remain in the hearts of the victims' families, but there is a great deal of solace when justice is served against those responsible for the suffering of the Syrian people.
It may be difficult to execute the sentence against Bashar al-Assad, but he was likely watching from his lavish home in Moscow the live broadcast from the Judicial Palace in Damascus, following the celebration of the victims' families after the verdicts were issued. Perhaps he felt his neck tighten more than once as he heard the sentence of death against him, and even if it were impossible to carry out the sentence, he would live in a continuous nightmare for the rest of his life. The constant feeling that retribution is pursuing him is harsher than death itself.
