The World Health Organization's advisory group recommended prioritizing the "Ervebo" vaccine, the only licensed vaccine against the Zaire Ebola virus, for inclusion in a randomized clinical trial as part of the response to the Bundibugyo virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The organization clarified that preliminary data derived from animal studies showed the vaccine's ability to provide cross-protection; however, its efficacy against the Bundibugyo virus still needs to be proven.
It confirmed that using the vaccine to immunize contacts of infected individuals does not raise safety concerns, while the development of a dedicated vaccine against the Bundibugyo virus remains the preferred long-term option.
