بعد ما يقرب من ثلاثة عقود على جريمة هزت وجدان الشارع البريطاني، تطفو على السطح اعترافات صادمة وأدلة جنائية جديدة قد تقتلع أحكاماً قضائية راسخة وتفك لغز واحدة من أكثر القضايا غموضاً وتعقيداً في تاريخ المملكة المتحدة.
لغز الجريمة
تعود تفاصيل الكابوس إلى التاسع من يوليو عام 1996، في مقاطعة «كينت» هادئة الأجواء؛ حيث كانت الأم «لين راسل» (45 عاماً) تعود برفقة طفلتيها «جوزي» (9 أعوام) و«ميغان» (6 أعوام) من نزهة مدرسية. وفي طريق عودتهن، باغتهن مجهول بهجوم وحشي باستخدام مطرقة، أسفر عن مقتل الأم والطفلة الصغرى، بينما نَجَت «جوزي» بأعجوبة رغم إصابتها البالغة.
وعلى إثر ذلك، أُدين «مايكل ستون» بالجريمة وقُضي عليه بالسجن مدى الحياة، إلا أنه ظل طوال عقود يصرّ بصلابة على براءته من الدم الذي حُكم عليه به.
مشتبه به من الظل
كشفت صحيفة «ديلي ميل» البريطانية عن تطور دراماتيكي قد يقلب الطاولة، ينصبّ حول مشتبه به جديد يدعى «ريموند باك» (46 عاماً وقت انتحاره)؛ وهو نجار وسباك عرف عنه الشغف بعالم السحر والتنجيم والسلوك العنيف.
وقدّم أفراد من عائلة «باك» إفادات رسمية تحت القسم أمام «لجنة مراجعة القضايا الجنائية» (CCRC)، مؤكدين أنه ترك رسالة انتحار قاطعة قبل أن ينهي حياته عام 2000 بالقفز من أعالي منحدرات «بيشي هيد»، كتب فيها: «لا أستطيع التعايش مع الشعور بالذنب».
وقالت محامية ستون، كارين تودنر، إنها تواصلت مع مكتب الطبيب الشرعي للوصول للرسالة المسجلة، مؤكدة أن عدم العثور عليها في الأرشيف حتى اللحظة لا ينفي وجودها الجازم في شهادات الشهود.
خيوط تترابط
ولم تتوقف المفاجآت عند الرسالة؛ فقد أدلى شاهد يُدعى «روس شيلدز» (كان يبلغ 9 أعوام وقت الحادثة) بشهادة مثيرة، كشف فيها أنه سمع «باك» بنفسه يقول لأحد أقربائه يوم وقوع الجريمة: «لقد ارتكبت أمراً لا يُغتفر.. قتلت ثلاثة أشخاص».
علاوة على ذلك، أشار أفراد العائلة إلى أن «باك» كان يمتلك سيارة بلون بيج، وهي المواصفات ذاتها التي بحث عنها المحققون في تسعينيات القرن الماضي دون جدوى.
الفرصة الأخيرة
في خطوة جادة للوصول إلى الحقيقة، وافق أحد أقارب «باك» على إعطاء عينة من حمضه النووي (DNA) لمقارنتها بالأدلة البيولوجية المأخوذة من مسرح الجريمة عبر التقنيات الجينية الحديثة.
وترى هيئة الدفاع أن ظهور اسم «باك»، مدعوماً باعترافات سابقة للقاتل المتسلسل الشهير «ليفي بيلفيلد»، يشكل أسباباً جوهرية لإعادة القضية أمام محكمة الاستئناف لتبرئة موكلهم القابع خلف الأسوار منذ نحو 30 عاماً، فيما تواصل لجنة المراجعة تقييم الأدلة لإصدار قرارها النهائي.

The details of the nightmare date back to July 9, 1996, in the quiet county of Kent, where mother Lynn Russell (45 years old) was returning with her daughters Josie (9 years old) and Megan (6 years old) from a school outing. On their way home, they were ambushed by an unknown assailant in a brutal attack using a hammer, resulting in the death of the mother and the younger daughter, while Josie miraculously survived despite her severe injuries.
As a result, Michael Stone was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison, yet he has steadfastly maintained his innocence of the blood he was condemned for over the decades.
A Suspect from the Shadows
The British newspaper Daily Mail revealed a dramatic development that could turn the tables, focusing on a new suspect named Raymond Buck (46 years old at the time of his suicide); a carpenter and plumber known for his passion for the world of magic, astrology, and violent behavior.
Members of the Buck family provided official testimonies under oath before the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), confirming that he left a definitive suicide note before ending his life in 2000 by jumping from the cliffs of Beachy Head, in which he wrote: “I cannot live with the feeling of guilt”.
Stone's lawyer, Karen Todner, stated that she has contacted the coroner's office to obtain the recorded note, asserting that its absence from the archive so far does not negate its firm existence in witness testimonies.
Threads Connecting
The surprises did not stop at the note; a witness named Ross Shields (who was 9 years old at the time of the incident) provided a compelling testimony, revealing that he heard Buck himself say to a relative on the day of the crime: “I have done something unforgivable... I killed three people”.
Moreover, family members pointed out that Buck owned a beige car, which matched the specifications that investigators searched for in the 1990s without success.
The Last Chance
In a serious step towards uncovering the truth, a relative of Buck agreed to provide a DNA sample to compare it with biological evidence taken from the crime scene using modern genetic techniques.
The defense believes that the emergence of Buck's name, supported by previous confessions from the infamous serial killer Levi Bellfield, constitutes substantial grounds to bring the case back before the Court of Appeal to exonerate their client, who has been behind bars for nearly 30 years, while the review committee continues to evaluate the evidence to issue its final decision.
