في لحظة استرخاء خاطفة على شرفة منزلها، لم تكن تتوقع أن ألوان الطبيعة قد تتحول في ثوانٍ إلى كابوس يهدد حياتها ومستقبلها الفني. بين آلام حادة كطلقة نارية ورحلة سباق مع الزمن بين أروقة المستشفيات، عاشت عازفة أمريكية ساعات من الرعب الحقيقي بحثاً عن النجاة من سمّ قاتل.
لدغة في شرفة المنزل
تحولت جلسة مسائية هادئة على الشرفة الخلفية لمنزل «ري لوسون» بمدينة ميرتل بيتش (ولاية كارولينا الجنوبية) إلى تجربة مرعبة، عندما باغتها هجوم مفاجئ من أفعى «نحاسية الرأس» (Copperhead) كانت تختبئ ببراعة بين أغصان نبات الياسمين، لتلدغها بشكل مباشر في يدها.
وتصف لوسون تلك اللحظة القاسية لصحيفة «بيبول» قائلة: «كان ألمًا حادًا وممزقًا للغاية، شعرت وكأن رصاصة اخترقت يدي في ثانية واحدة».
رحلة الشك والرعب بين 3 مستشفيات
لم تكن اللدغة هي المعاناة الوحيدة، بل بدأت رحلة البحث المعقدة عن العلاج؛ إذ سارعت لوسون إلى مركز رعاية عاجلة، ومنه إلى قسم الطوارئ في مستشفى قريب، إلا أنها صُدمت بعدم توفر «مضاد السموم» في كليهما.
أدى هذا النقص الطبي إلى نقلها على وجه السرعة إلى مستشفى ثالث، لتخوض سباقاً مع الزمن قبل أن يسري السم في جسدها. وعن تلك الساعات الطويلة من الانتظار، تقول لوسون: «كان الخوف ينهكني، بدأت أفكاري تذهب نحو التخيل المرعب بفقدان أصابعي أو يدي بالكامل».
تهديد مباشر لمهنتها الموسيقية
خوف لوسون لم يكن مجرد هلع طبيعي من الموت أو البتر، بل كان مساساً بشغف حياتها؛ فهي تعمل عازفة على آلة «الباس» في فرقة موسيقية محلية تُدعى The Goofy Footers. وأوضحت أن التفكير في احتمال فقدانها القدرة على العزف وتدمير مسيرتها الفنية كان الكابوس الأكبر الذي يلاحقها خلال ساعات الانتظار الحرجة.
الأفعى النحاسية.. القاتل المتخفي
تُعد أفعى «نحاسية الرأس» من أكثر الزواحف السامة انتشاراً على طول الساحل الشرقي للولايات المتحدة، وتمتد رقعة وجودها من ولايتي كارولينا الشمالية والجنوبية وصولاً إلى تكساس غرباً.
وتتخذ هذه الأفاعي من الغابات، والمناطق الصخرية، والمستنقعات، والمساحات المحيطة بالحدائق المنزلية مأوى لها، وتتميز بقدرتها الفائقة على التخفي بفضل ألوانها التي تتدرج بين البني الفاتح والنحاسي مع نقوش هندسية تدمجها تماماً بيئتها الشجرية والترابية.

A Bite on the Porch
A calm evening session on the back porch of "Ree Lawson's" home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, turned into a terrifying experience when she was suddenly attacked by a Copperhead snake that had cleverly hidden among the jasmine branches, biting her directly on the hand.
Lawson describes that harsh moment to People magazine, saying: "It was an intense and tearing pain; I felt like a bullet had pierced my hand in an instant."
A Journey of Doubt and Terror Among 3 Hospitals
The bite was not the only suffering; the complex search for treatment began. Lawson rushed to an urgent care center, and from there to the emergency department of a nearby hospital, only to be shocked by the unavailability of the antivenom at both locations.
This medical shortage led to her being urgently transferred to a third hospital, racing against time before the venom spread through her body. About those long hours of waiting, Lawson says: "Fear was exhausting me; my thoughts began to drift towards the terrifying imagination of losing my fingers or my entire hand."
A Direct Threat to Her Musical Career
Lawson's fear was not just a natural panic of death or amputation, but a blow to her passion for life; she plays bass in a local band called The Goofy Footers. She explained that the thought of possibly losing her ability to play and destroying her artistic career was the greatest nightmare haunting her during those critical hours of waiting.
