لم يدرك إدريس أن شهامته ستكون التذكرة الأخيرة في حياته، إذ باغته الجاني المجهول بطعنة نافذة غادرة بسلاح أبيض قبل أن يتوارى عن الأنظار في الأزقة. وعلى الرغم من تسارع وتيرة الإسعافات الأولية ونقله الفوري، أُعلنت وفاة البطل متأثراً بإصابته البليغة، ليتوشح الحي السكني بالسواد.
الفاجعة أطلقت صدمة مدوية في كبريات الصحف والشبكات البلجيكية، حيث أفردت مؤسسات إعلامية بارزة مثل «RTBF» و«Le Soir» و«Sud info» تغطيات واسعة، واصفة ما قام به الرجل المغربي بـ«الشجاعة المدنية الاستثنائية» التي ندر وجودها في المجتمعات الحديثة.
