وفي نحو الساعة 1:45 بعد الظهر، استجابت الشرطة لبلاغ سرقة في متجر وول مارت الواقع على شارع أتلانتيك في مقاطعة ستارك، وتوجه الضابط المكلف بالتحقيق إلى غرفة منع الخسائر حيث كان يجلس المشتبه به شين نيومان البالغ من العمر 21 عاماً برفقة كاترينا جيفري البالغة 23 عاماً.
وفوجئ الضابط بمحاولة نيومان سحب مسدس وإطلاق النار على رأسه، لكن السلاح تعطل في اللحظة الحاسمة. وتدخل أحد موظفي الحماية بسرعة وقفز على نيومان، ما منع محاولة إطلاق النار مرة أخرى. وأظهرت كاميرات الجسم التي يرتديها الضابط لحظات التوتر الشديد، حيث امتنع عن إطلاق النار تجنباً لإصابة أحد الموظفين.
وتمكنت الشرطة في النهاية من السيطرة على الموقف وإلقاء القبض على نيومان، الذي وُجهت إليه تهم شملت محاولة القتل، والاعتداء الجنائي على ضابط شرطة، والسرقة، وحيازة المخدرات، وحمل سلاح بشكل غير قانوني، مع العلم أن نيومان محظور عليه قانونياً امتلاك أسلحة نارية بسبب إدانة سابقة. كما عُثر بحوزته على 50 حبة زرقاء من مخدر المولي، بينما واجهت جيفري تهمة التواطؤ في السرقة.
ومَثل المشتبه بهما أمام محكمة كانتون البلدية، وحددت كفالة نيومان بمليون دولار، وكفالة جيفري بـ500 ألف دولار، على أن يعادا للمحكمة في الـ23 من ديسمبر الجاري.
The Walmart branch in Ohio witnessed a terrifying incident when a young man attempted to shoot a police officer during an investigation into a theft, but fate intervened at the last moment to avoid a disaster.
At around 1:45 PM, police responded to a report of theft at the Walmart store located on Atlantic Avenue in Stark County, and the investigating officer headed to the loss prevention room where the suspect, 21-year-old Shane Newman, was sitting with 23-year-old Katrina Jeffrey.
The officer was taken by surprise when Newman tried to pull a gun and shoot him in the head, but the weapon malfunctioned at the critical moment. A security staff member quickly intervened and jumped on Newman, preventing another attempt to fire. Body camera footage worn by the officer captured the moments of intense tension, as he refrained from shooting to avoid hitting any of the employees.
Police eventually managed to gain control of the situation and arrested Newman, who was charged with attempted murder, assaulting a police officer, theft, drug possession, and illegal possession of a firearm, noting that Newman is legally prohibited from owning firearms due to a prior conviction. He was also found in possession of 50 blue pills of the drug Molly, while Jeffrey faced a charge of complicity in the theft.
The suspects appeared before the Canton Municipal Court, with Newman's bail set at one million dollars and Jeffrey's at five hundred thousand dollars, with both required to return to court on December 23rd.
