مزايدة شرسة تكسر التقديرات
المزاد على اللوحة انطلق من 130 مليون دولار، قبل أن يتحول خلال دقائق إلى معركة شرسة بين 6 مزايدين عبر الهواتف، في قاعة المزاد الجديدة بمبنى بروير الشهير في نيويورك. العروض قفزت سريعاً متجاوزة التقدير الأولي البالغ 150 مليون دولار، حتى حسمت الصفقة عند 236.4 مليون دولار، في لحظة دوّت بعدها قاعة المزاد بالتصفيق، بينما ارتسمت الابتسامات على وجه المدير التنفيذي لـ«سوذبيز» باتريك دراهي، الذي كان يقف قرب بنك الهواتف متابعاً مجريات هذه اللحظة التاريخية.
«فرصة نادرة» لاقتناء جوهرة كليمت

لمدة تقارب 40 عاماً، ظلت اللوحة معلقة في شقة ليونارد أ. لودر على الجادة الخامسة في نيويورك، بعد أن اقتناها ضمن مجموعته الخاصة بالفن النمساوي المبكر. لودر، الذي توفي هذا العام، كان أحد أبرز جامعي أعمال كليمت، وقد قدمت «سوذبيز» ضماناً مالياً لمجموعته المكوّنة من 54 قطعة لضمان بيعها في المزاد.
أرقام جديدة في سوق الفن الحديث
السعر القياسي للوحة كليمت الجديدة تجاوز الرقم السابق لأغلى عمل من الفن الحديث، المسجل باسم لوحة «مارلين مونرو» لأندي وارهول التي بيعت بـ195 مليون دولار عام 2022، كما حطم الرقم القياسي السابق لأعمال كليمت في المزادات، المُسجّل للوحة «Lady with a Fan» التي بيعت بـ108.4 مليون دولار عام 2023. وبهذا الرقم تسجل «سوذبيز» أعلى سعر في تاريخها لعمل فني واحد.
لوحة نجت من النازية والحرب والحريق
قصة اللوحة لا تقتصر على قيمتها الفنية والمادية؛ إذ نجت من الحرب العالمية الثانية بعد أن أُخفيت لتفادي نهب النازيين، ثم نجت لاحقاً من حريق قلعة إميندورف الذي دمّر عشرات الأعمال الأخرى لكليمت. اليوم، تُعد «بورتريه إليزابيث ليدرير» واحدة من البورتريهات القليلة كاملة الحجم للفنان النمساوي التي لا تزال في ملكية خاصة، ما يضيف إلى قيمتها الفنية والتاريخية بُعداً استثنائياً جعل منها نجمة مزادات العام.

A Fierce Bidding War Breaks Estimates
The auction for the painting started at $130 million, before quickly turning into a fierce battle among six phone bidders in the new auction hall at the famous Breuer building in New York. Bids rapidly jumped past the initial estimate of $150 million, culminating in a final sale at $236.4 million, after which the auction hall erupted in applause, while smiles spread across the face of Sotheby's CEO Patrick Drahi, who was standing near the phone bank, watching this historic moment unfold.
A "Rare Opportunity" to Acquire a Klimt Gem
Sotheby's European chairman Oliver Barker described the work by saying, "This is one of the last opportunities to acquire a portrait of such significance by Klimt... It is a rare gem." The painting was created between 1914 and 1916, depicting the young Elisabeth Lederer in her twenties, wearing an imperial Chinese robe adorned with a golden dragon, set against a richly decorative background of gold and warm colors, reflecting Klimt's symbolic and erotic style in his later stages.
From Leonard's Apartment to Auction Glory
For nearly 40 years, the painting hung in Leonard A. Lauder's apartment on Fifth Avenue in New York, after he acquired it as part of his private collection of early Austrian art. Lauder, who passed away this year, was one of the foremost collectors of Klimt's works, and Sotheby's provided a financial guarantee for his collection of 54 pieces to ensure their sale at auction.
New Figures in the Modern Art Market
The record price for the new Klimt painting surpassed the previous record for the most expensive modern artwork, held by Andy Warhol's "Marilyn Monroe," which sold for $195 million in 2022, and also broke the previous auction record for Klimt's works, which was held by "Lady with a Fan," sold for $108.4 million in 2023. With this figure, Sotheby's records the highest price in its history for a single artwork.
A Painting that Survived Nazism, War, and Fire
The story of the painting goes beyond its artistic and monetary value; it survived World War II after being hidden to avoid Nazi looting, and later survived the fire at the Emindorf Castle that destroyed dozens of other Klimt works. Today, "Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer" is one of the few full-size portraits by the Austrian artist still in private ownership, adding an exceptional dimension to its artistic and historical value, making it the star of this year's auctions.
