ووفق بيان الشرطة، كانت الجدة كريستين أندرز البالغة من العمر 55 سنة تقود السيارة تحت تأثير الكحول والمهدئات، ما أدى إلى وفاة الطفل كارسن لوسون فورًا في موقع الحادثة. وأوضحت الشرطة أنّ الجدة توقفت فور استيعابها ما حدث وأبدت تعاونًا كاملًا قبل إلقاء القبض عليها في المكان، بينما تستمر الجهات المختصة في جمع الأدلة لتحديد تفاصيل الحادثة بدقة، بحسب ما نقلته صحيفة «ميرور».
ووصف رئيس شرطة سليديل دانيال سوزينو الحادثة بأنها «أسوأ كابوس يمكن لأي والد أن يعيشه»، مؤكّدًا أن العائلة تواجه مأساة مضاعفة بفقدان طفلها واعتقال الجدة المتهمة بالتسبب في وفاته. وأشار إلى أن عناصر الشرطة والمستجيبين الأوائل تأثروا بشدة بسبب المشهد الصادم الذي شهدوه في ذلك الصباح.
