ارتفاع قياسي في الحالات
وكشفت بيانات وكالة الأمن الصحي البريطانية (UKHSA) عن ارتفاع الإصابات بالإنفلونزا إلى ثلاثة أضعاف المعدلات المعتادة لهذا الوقت من العام، مع دخول 247 شخصا إلى المستشفيات خلال الأسبوع الماضي، غالبيتهم من الأطفال في سن الدراسة. وتشير التقديرات إلى أن هذا الموسم قد يكون الأسوأ في بريطانيا منذ أكثر من عقد.
تحذير من ضغط غير مسبوق على الطوارئ
وقال المدير التنفيذي لهيئة الخدمات الصحية الوطنية (NHS England) جيم ماكي، إن أقسام الطوارئ ستواجه هذا الشتاء طلبا هو الأعلى منذ تأسيس الخدمة، مؤكدا أن الجمع بين «موجة إنفلونزا طويلة وصعبة» وإضراب الأطباء المقيمين سيجعل الأسابيع القادمة شديدة القسوة على النظام الصحي.
وأوضح ماكي في رسالة وجهها إلى قادة الهيئة: «قد نشهد خلال الأشهر القليلة القادمة تحديات تذكرنا بتلك اللحظات العصيبة التي مررنا بها جميعا خلال الجائحة».
تحذيرات من خبراء الصحة
من جانبه، قال مستشار علم الأوبئة في وكالة الأمن الصحي البريطانية الدكتور أليكس ألين: «نشهد بداية غير عادية ومبكرة لموسم الإنفلونزا، مع زيادات حادة بين الأطفال، وارتفاع واضح في الفئات العمرية الأخرى». وأضاف: «اللقاح هو أفضل وسيلة للحماية، وكل عام نرى آلاف الإصابات الشديدة والوفيات، لذا يجب على المؤهلين أن يحجزوا موعدهم في أقرب وقت ممكن».
12.2 مليون جرعة لقاح حتى الآن
وأفادت هيئة الخدمات الصحية الوطنية بأنها وزعت حتى الآن أكثر من 12.2 مليون جرعة من لقاح الإنفلونزا منذ بدء الحملة في الأول من سبتمبر، داعية جميع البالغين المؤهلين إلى تلقّي اللقاح قبل نهاية نوفمبر، خصوصا كبار السن، والحوامل، والعاملين في قطاع الرعاية الصحية، والأشخاص ذوي الحالات المزمنة.
10 آلاف وفاة سنوياً
وتتسبب الإنفلونزا في نحو 40 ألف حالة دخول إلى المستشفيات وأكثر من 10 آلاف وفاة سنويا في بريطانيا، وهو رقم مرشح للارتفاع هذا العام، ما لم يلتزم السكان بالإجراءات الوقائية والتطعيم في الوقت المناسب.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) revealed that flu infections have risen to three times the usual rates for this time of year, with 247 people admitted to hospitals last week, the majority of whom were school-aged children. Estimates suggest that this season could be the worst in the UK in over a decade.
Warning of Unprecedented Pressure on Emergency Services
Jim Mackey, the Chief Executive of NHS England, stated that emergency departments will face the highest demand this winter since the establishment of the service, emphasizing that the combination of a "long and difficult flu wave" and strikes by resident doctors will make the coming weeks extremely challenging for the healthcare system.
Mackey explained in a message to the agency's leaders: "We may face challenges in the coming months that remind us of those difficult moments we all experienced during the pandemic."
Warnings from Health Experts
For his part, Dr. Alex Allen, an epidemiological advisor at the UK Health Security Agency, said: "We are witnessing an unusual and early start to the flu season, with sharp increases among children and a noticeable rise in other age groups." He added: "The vaccine is the best means of protection, and every year we see thousands of severe infections and deaths, so those eligible should book their appointments as soon as possible."
12.2 Million Vaccine Doses Administered So Far
The NHS has reported that it has distributed more than 12.2 million doses of the flu vaccine since the campaign began on September 1, urging all eligible adults to receive the vaccine before the end of November, especially the elderly, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and individuals with chronic conditions.
10,000 Deaths Annually
Influenza causes around 40,000 hospital admissions and more than 10,000 deaths annually in the UK, a figure likely to rise this year unless the population adheres to preventive measures and timely vaccination.
