تحولت الاحتفالات الدينية في أحد المعابد بجنوب الهند إلى مأساة بعد أن لقي تسعة أشخاص على الأقل مصرعهم وأُصيب العشرات، إثر تدافع ضخم وقع بين جموع المصلين أثناء طقوس دينية مكتظة بالمشاركين.
وذكرت السلطات المحلية أن الحادثة وقعت داخل معبد سوامي فينكاتيسوارا بولاية أندرا براديش، حيث احتشد مئات الهندوس لأداء الصلوات والاحتفال بأحد الأيام المقدسة في الديانة الهندوسية، بينما أدى التدافع المفاجئ إلى سقوط عدد من الضحايا.
وقال ضابط الشرطة ماهيسوارا ريدي لوكالة أسوشيتد برس إن التحقيقات الأولية تشير إلى أن الحادثة نتجت عن انهيار جزء من شبكة حديدية مخصّصة لتنظيم صفوف المصلين داخل المعبد، ما تسبب في تدفق الحشود بشكل غير منضبط.
وأضاف المسؤول الحكومي سوابنيل دينكار أن السلطات تخشى ارتفاع عدد القتلى، لوجود مصابين في حالات حرجة، موضحاً أن الفرق الطبية والإغاثية تعمل على مدار الساعة لتقديم العلاج للمصابين والسيطرة على الموقف.
وتزامنت الحادثة مع مناسبة دينية هندوسية، حين توافد آلاف الزوّار لأداء الطقوس والصلاة في المعبد التاريخي الذي يعد من أكثر المزارات ازدحاماً في الهند.
The religious celebrations at a temple in southern India turned into a tragedy after at least nine people were killed and dozens were injured due to a massive stampede that occurred among the crowds of worshippers during a religious ceremony packed with participants.
Local authorities reported that the incident took place inside the Swami Venkateswara Temple in Andhra Pradesh, where hundreds of Hindus gathered to pray and celebrate one of the sacred days in Hinduism, while the sudden stampede led to the fall of several victims.
Police officer Maheshwara Reddy told the Associated Press that initial investigations indicate that the incident resulted from the collapse of a metal framework designed to organize the lines of worshippers inside the temple, causing the crowds to surge uncontrollably.
Government official Swapanil Dinkar added that authorities fear the death toll may rise, as there are injured individuals in critical condition, explaining that medical and relief teams are working around the clock to provide treatment to the injured and manage the situation.
The incident coincided with a Hindu religious occasion, as thousands of visitors flocked to perform rituals and pray at the historic temple, which is one of the busiest pilgrimage sites in India.
