في حادثة أصابت المجتمع الأسترالي بالذهول، عُثر على سيدة مسنة تبلغ من العمر 80 عاماً، متوفاة على جزيرة نائية في الحيد المرجاني العظيم، بعد أن تُركت خلف السفينة السياحية التي كانت تستقلها.
وكانت الضحية سوزان ريز من سيدني نزلت من سفينة «كورال أدفانتشر» يوم السبت الماضي في جزيرة ليزارد لتستمتع بمسار المشي نحو نقطة مراقبة جبلية، لكنها لم تعد أبداً. وغادر طاقم السفينة الجزيرة قبل خمس ساعات فقط من الإبلاغ عن اختفائها، تاركاً إياها وحيدة في مكان بعيد وخطر.
وعثرت فرق البحث على جثتها على بعد 50 متراً من المسار، ويبدو أنها سقطت من جرف أو منحدر أثناء محاولتها السير في الجزيرة، في حادثة مأساوية أثارت الصدمة والغضب على حد سواء.
لم تُخف ابنتها كاثرين ريز غضبها من شركة الرحلات البحرية، متهمة إياها بـ «الإهمال الكامل وفقدان الحد الأدنى من الحس المنطقي»، مؤكدة أن التقصير أدى مباشرة إلى موت والدتها وحيدة في مكان نائي.
وأعادت الحادثة فتح النقاش حول سلامة كبار السن في الرحلات السياحية، والإجراءات الوقائية التي يبدو أن بعض الشركات تتغاضى عنها في سبيل الربح، وسط مطالبات بتشديد الرقابة على الرحلات البحرية.

Her daughter, Catherine Rees, did not hide her anger towards the cruise company, accusing it of "complete negligence and a lack of basic common sense," asserting that the failure directly led to her mother dying alone in a remote place.
The incident has reopened the discussion about the safety of elderly people on tourist trips and the preventive measures that some companies seem to overlook in the name of profit, amid calls for stricter oversight of cruise operations.
