لقى 31 شخصاً مصرعهم، وأصيب نحو 42 آخرين بجروح خطيرة في حادثة انفجار شاحنة صهريج محملة بالبنزين، وقعت يوم الثلاثاء في منطقة بيدا بولاية نيجر شمال وسط نيجيريا، وفقاً لتقارير أجهزة الإسعاف والشرطة المحلية.
وأفاد المتحدث باسم الشرطة الولائية واسيو أبيودون، في بيان رسمي، أن الانفجار الذي وقع على طريق سريع رئيسي يربط بين العاصمة أبوجا والمدن الشمالية «وقع بعد سقوط الشاحنة، وتجمع عدد كبير من السكان لجمع الوقود المتسرب رغم التحذيرات، مما أدى إلى الكارثة».
وأكدت وكالة إدارة الطوارئ الوطنية أن الفرق الإسعافية نقلت الجرحى إلى مستشفيات محلية، بينما يستمر البحث عن مفقودين تحت الأنقاض، مع توقعات بارتفاع الرقم.
ووصف حاكم ولاية نيجر عمر باجو، الحادثة بأنها «مؤلمة ومأساوية»، مشدداً على ضرورة تجنب جمع الوقود من الشاحنات المقلوبة، وأعلن مساعدات للعائلات المتضررة.
وشهدت المنطقة حالة من الصدمة، إذ أدى الحريق إلى تدمير 15 محلاً تجارياً على الأقل، وفقاً لشهود عيان، الذين رووا كيف حاول الإطفاء السيطرة على النيران لساعات.
وتعدل ولاية نيجر، الواقعة شمال وسط نيجيريا مركزاً تجارياً رئيسياً يربط الشمال بالجنوب، وتعاني من حوادث مرور متكررة بسبب سوء حالة الطرق والغياب شبه الكامل لشبكة السكك الحديدية، مما يجعل الشاحنات الثقيلة الوسيلة الرئيسية لنقل البضائع والوقود.

في السنوات الأخيرة، شهدت الولاية حوادث انفجار وقود مدمرة، مثل انفجار يناير 2025 الذي قتل 98 شخصاً في محاولة نقل وقود باستخدام مولد كهربائي، وانفجار أكتوبر 2024 في ولاية جيغاوا الذي أودى بحياة 147 شخصاً.
31 people lost their lives, and around 42 others were seriously injured in an incident involving the explosion of a fuel tanker truck that occurred on Tuesday in the Bida area of Niger State in north-central Nigeria, according to reports from local ambulance services and police.
The spokesperson for the state police, Wasiu Abiodun, stated in an official statement that the explosion, which took place on a major highway connecting the capital Abuja to northern cities, "occurred after the truck overturned, and a large number of residents gathered to collect the spilled fuel despite warnings, leading to the disaster."
The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed that rescue teams transported the injured to local hospitals, while the search for missing persons under the rubble continues, with expectations of the number rising.
Niger State Governor Umar Bago described the incident as "painful and tragic," emphasizing the need to avoid collecting fuel from overturned trucks, and announced assistance for the affected families.
The region has been in a state of shock, as the fire destroyed at least 15 commercial shops, according to eyewitnesses, who recounted how firefighters struggled to control the flames for hours.
Niger State, located in north-central Nigeria, serves as a major commercial hub linking the north to the south and suffers from frequent traffic accidents due to poor road conditions and the near-total absence of a railway network, making heavy trucks the primary means of transporting goods and fuel.
According to reports from the World Health Organization for 2024, approximately 40,000 traffic accidents occur annually in Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of more than 20,000 people, with 60% of these concentrated on highways such as the Abuja-Kaduna road.
In recent years, the state has witnessed devastating fuel explosion incidents, such as the January 2025 explosion that killed 98 people while attempting to transport fuel using a generator, and the October 2024 explosion in Jigawa State that claimed the lives of 147 people.
