في واحدة من أكثر القضايا الجنائية غرابة في الولايات المتحدة، أصدرت محكمة في ولاية يوتا الأمريكية حكما بسجن نيكولاس روسي (38 عاما) لمدة لا تقل عن خمس سنوات بعد تورطه في جريمتي اغتصاب تعودان إلى عام 2008، وذلك بعد محاولته الإفلات من العدالة بتزوير وفاته والهروب إلى أوروبا.
وتصدّر نيكولاس روسي المعروف أيضا باسم نيكولاس ألافيرديان عناوين الصحف عام 2020 حينما أُعلنت كذبا وفاته بسبب السرطان، قبل أن يتضح لاحقا أنه كان مختبئا في بريطانيا تحت هوية مزيفة باسم «آرثر نايت». وتمكن من التنقل بين مدن بريطانية عدة مستخدما أكثر من 12 اسما مستعارا لتجنّب كشفه.
وبعد عامين من الاختباء، سقط روسي في قبضة السلطات في ديسمبر 2021 حينما تعرف موظفو مستشفى الملكة إليزابيث في غلاسكو على وشومه أثناء تلقيه علاجا من فايروس كورونا. وحاول المتهم التملص مدعيا أنه يتيم إيرلندي، لكن التحقيقات والتحاليل الجنائية أكدت هويته الحقيقية.
وفي يناير 2024، جرى تسليمه رسميا إلى الولايات المتحدة، ليواجه المحاكمة في ولاية يوتا، إذ تمت إدانته أخيرا في جرائم اغتصاب منفصلة. وأصدرت المحكمة في أكتوبر حكما بالسجن غير محدد المدة، ما يفتح الباب أمام إمكانية بقائه خلف القضبان مدى الحياة، بانتظار جلسة النطق بالحكم الثاني في نوفمبر القادم.
واعتبر الادعاء أن روسي يشكل خطرا حقيقيا على المجتمع، وأنه استخدم الاغتصاب كأداة للسيطرة على ضحاياه. فيما أكدت إحدى الضحايا أمام المحكمة أن ما فعله ترك وراءه أثرا من الخوف والألم لن يندمل.
وأعادت القضية تسليط الضوء على أهمية تتبع الملفات الجنائية القديمة عبر الحمض النووي، إذ ساهمت هذه التقنية في كشف هويته بعد أكثر من عقد على الجريمة.
In one of the strangest criminal cases in the United States, a court in the state of Utah has sentenced Nicholas Rossi (38 years old) to no less than five years in prison after his involvement in two rape cases dating back to 2008, following his attempt to evade justice by faking his death and fleeing to Europe.
Nicholas Rossi, also known as Nicholas Alahverdian, made headlines in 2020 when his death was falsely announced due to cancer, only for it to later become clear that he had been hiding in Britain under a fake identity named "Arthur Knight." He managed to move between several British cities using more than 12 aliases to avoid detection.
After two years of hiding, Rossi fell into the hands of authorities in December 2021 when staff at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow recognized his tattoos while he was receiving treatment for the coronavirus. The accused tried to evade capture by claiming to be an Irish orphan, but investigations and forensic analyses confirmed his true identity.
In January 2024, he was officially extradited to the United States to face trial in Utah, where he was finally convicted of separate rape charges. The court issued an indeterminate prison sentence in October, opening the door for the possibility of him remaining behind bars for life, pending a second sentencing hearing in November.
The prosecution argued that Rossi poses a real danger to society and that he used rape as a tool to control his victims. One of the victims testified in court that what he did left behind a mark of fear and pain that will never heal.
The case has highlighted the importance of tracking old criminal files through DNA, as this technology helped reveal his identity more than a decade after the crime.
