وُلد ممداني في كمبالا، أوغندا، لأبوين من أصول هندية، وهو نجل المخرجة السينمائية الهندية الشهيرة ميرا ناير والأكاديمي الأوغندي محمود ممداني، وبحسب تقرير لوكالة «رويترز»، فإن هذه الخلفية المتنوعة إلى جانب مسيرته السابقة كمغني راب تحت اسمي «يونغ كارداموم» و«مستر كارداموم»، جعلته رمزا ملهما في مدينة نيويورك متعددة الثقافات.
قبل دخوله عالم السياسة، كان ممداني، مغنيا لموسيقى الهيب هوب، وشارك في مهرجان «نييجي نييجي» الموسيقي في أوغندا عام 2016 مع صديقه حسين عبدالبار.

حملته لمنصب العمدة، التي بدأت في أكتوبر 2024، ركزت على قضايا الطبقة العاملة، مثل توفير حافلات عامة مجانية، تجميد الإيجارات في الوحدات المستقرة، إنشاء متاجر بقالة تديرها المدينة لخفض أسعار المواد الغذائية، وبناء 200 ألف وحدة سكنية ميسورة التكلفة، كما دعا إلى زيادة الضرائب على الشركات والأفراد الذين يتجاوز دخلهم السنوي مليون دولار، وزيادة الحد الأدنى للأجور إلى 30 دولارا بحلول 2030.
ويُعتبر ممداني، رمزا للتنوع في نيويورك، إذ يعكس تراثه الهندي-الأوغندي الطابع المتعدد الثقافات للمدينة، واستخدم في حملته مقاطع فيديو إبداعية مستوحاة من بوليوود، وتحدث بلغات متعددة مثل الإسبانية والبنغالية لجذب الناخبين من الجاليات المتنوعة، وفي أحد مقاطع الفيديو، ظهر مع أسطورة الهيب هوب RZA من فرقة Wu-Tang Clan، مستعرضا نهجه الشعبي في التواصل مع الناخبين.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to parents of Indian descent; he is the son of the renowned Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani. According to a report by Reuters, this diverse background, along with his previous career as a rapper under the names "Young Cardamom" and "Mr. Cardamom," has made him an inspiring symbol in New York City's multicultural landscape.
Before entering the political arena, Mamdani was a hip-hop artist and participated in the "Nyege Nyege" music festival in Uganda in 2016 with his friend Hussein Abdulbar.
Mamdani recorded several songs, including one about chapati bread, showcasing his dual identity with lyrics such as: "I carry the history of chapati, my roots are from India but I was born in Uganda, my skin is brown but I am Ugandan, I can rap in English and Luganda." This song reflected his pride in his Indian and Ugandan roots, a theme that resonates in his political campaign celebrating diversity.
Mamdani also contributed to the soundtrack of the film "Queen of Katwe," directed by his mother Mira Nair. This Disney production tells the story of a girl from the impoverished neighborhoods of Kampala who becomes a chess champion.
He appeared in the music video for the song alongside stars like Lupita Nyong'o, which helped boost his early fame, and collaborated on a music project with renowned food critic Madhur Jaffrey.
In 2020, Mamdani temporarily stepped away from music to run for a seat in the New York State Assembly for the 36th district in Queens, which has the largest Indian community in the city, and won the seat. In his annual financial disclosures, he still lists "independent rapper" as one of his occupations, with nominal income from song royalties.
His mayoral campaign, which began in October 2024, focused on working-class issues such as providing free public buses, freezing rents in stabilized units, creating city-run grocery stores to lower food prices, and building 200,000 affordable housing units. He also called for increased taxes on corporations and individuals earning over a million dollars annually, and raising the minimum wage to $30 by 2030.
Mamdani is considered a symbol of diversity in New York, reflecting his Indian-Ugandan heritage and the multicultural character of the city. He used creative video clips inspired by Bollywood in his campaign and spoke multiple languages, including Spanish and Bengali, to engage voters from diverse communities. In one video, he appeared with hip-hop legend RZA from the Wu-Tang Clan, showcasing his grassroots approach to connecting with voters.
Derrick Debro, one of the founders of the Nyege Nyege festival, said, "We knew who Zaharan was; it was exciting to see someone like him celebrate his background without shame, that's what made him special."
His friend Magnus Thompson, who worked with him on music production, expressed happiness that Mamdani did not abandon his democratic socialist views, noting that his success reflects his authenticity.
Despite his stunning victory in the Democratic primary in June 2025, where he defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, Mamdani faced criticism for his political stances, particularly his criticism of Israel's policies towards Palestinians and his call for high taxes on the wealthy. He also faced attacks from some groups due to his Islamic faith, yet he continued to focus on social and economic justice issues.
As the general election approaches, Mamdani faces competition from current Mayor Eric Adams and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, and possibly Cuomo as an independent candidate. However, in a predominantly Democratic city, Mamdani is considered the frontrunner to become the first Muslim and Indian-origin mayor in New York's history.
