أثارت سيدة بريطانية جدلاً واسعاً بعد كشفها عملها «معزيةً محترفةً» مقابل 60 دولاراً في الساعة، أي نحو 45 جنيهاً إسترلينياً، إذ تحضر الجنازات وتتقمص أدواراً مختلفة، فأحياناً تزعم أنها صديقة قديمة للمتوفى وفي أحيان أخرى تتقمص دور قريبة بعيدة، مع تقديمها في كل مرة قصة خلفية تبرر غيابها عن حياة الفقيد.
وتتطلب مهمتها تمثيلاً حقيقياً، إذ تعتمد على مشاهد حزينة من الأفلام أو أغنيات مؤثرة لاستحضار الدموع أمام الحضور، ما جعل بعض العائلات تثق بها وتستعين بخدماتها أكثر من مرة.
ورغم الانتقادات التي وصفت الفكرة بالمريبة وغير الأخلاقية، تؤكد المعزية المحترفة أن عملها عبارة عن تقديم خدمة مطلوبة وليست خداعاً. وأشارت إلى أن هذه المهنة ليست جديدة، فقد عرف التاريخ نساءً متخصصات في النواح والبكاء في المآتم، بداية من الصين القديمة ومصر الفرعونية، قبل أن تنتقل تدريجياً إلى الغرب، وتظهر اليوم في بريطانيا بشكل ملحوظ.
