أعلن مضيفو طيران شركة «إير كندا»، ممثلين بنقابة موظفي القطاع العام الكندية، عزمهم تنفيذ إضراب عن العمل بدءًا من السبت القادم، وهو أقرب موعد قانوني مسموح به وفقًا للقوانين العمالية الكندية، وذلك بعد فشل المفاوضات بين النقابة وإدارة الشركة حول قضايا رئيسية تتعلق بتحسين الأجور، ظروف العمل، والتعويض عن الساعات غير المدفوعة.
ووفقًا لتقارير «راديو كندا»، أبلغت النقابة الشركة رسميًا بقرار الإضراب، حيث من المقرر أن يبدأ في الساعة 12:58 صباحًا بتوقيت شرق كندا يوم السبت، حيث يمثل هذا الإضراب تهديدًا بتعطيل خطط السفر لآلاف الركاب، خصوصا مع اقتراب موسم السفر المزدحم.
وأشار الاتحاد إلى أن «إير كندا» توقفت عن إجراء حوار بنّاء حول قضايا مثل الأجور وساعات العمل غير المدفوعة، مما دفع أعضاء النقابة إلى اتخاذ هذا القرار، ويطالب مضيفو الطيران، الذين يزيد عددهم على 10,000 موظف في «إير كندا» وفرعها منخفض التكلفة «روج»، بزيادات في الأجور تتماشى مع معدل التضخم وقيمة السوق، بالإضافة إلى تعويض عن المهام غير المدفوعة مثل فحوصات السلامة الإلزامية ومساعدة الركاب قبل وبعد الرحلات.
ووفقًا للنقابة، يتقاضى المضيفون حاليًا راتبًا شهريًا يبلغ نحو 1,951.30 دولار كندي، وهو مبلغ تعتبره النقابة غير كافٍ لتغطية تكاليف المعيشة، وفي نهاية يوليو الماضي، صوّت 99.7% من أعضاء النقابة (بمشاركة 94.6%) لصالح الإضراب، مما يعكس الإجماع الكبير على ضرورة تحسين ظروف العمل.
من جانبها أعلنت «إير كندا» وصول المفاوضات إلى «طريق مسدود»، وأصدرت إشعارًا بإغلاق محتمل لعملياتها بدءًا من 16 أغسطس إذا لم يتم التوصل إلى اتفاق، كما رفضت النقابة اقتراح الشركة باللجوء إلى التحكيم الملزم.
وحذرت الشركة من أن الإضراب قد يؤدي إلى إلغاء رحلات جوية واسعة النطاق، مع إخطار العملاء عبر البريد الإلكتروني والرسائل النصية في حال إلغاء الرحلات، مع ضمان استرداد كامل المبالغ.
Flight attendants of "Air Canada," represented by the Canadian Public Sector Employees Union, announced their intention to go on strike starting next Saturday, which is the earliest legally permitted date according to Canadian labor laws, following the failure of negotiations between the union and the company management over key issues related to wage improvement, working conditions, and compensation for unpaid hours.
According to reports from "Radio Canada," the union officially notified the company of the strike decision, which is set to begin at 12:58 AM Eastern Time on Saturday. This strike poses a threat to disrupt travel plans for thousands of passengers, especially with the busy travel season approaching.
The union pointed out that "Air Canada" has stopped engaging in constructive dialogue regarding issues such as wages and unpaid working hours, prompting union members to make this decision. The flight attendants, who number over 10,000 employees at "Air Canada" and its low-cost branch "Rouge," are demanding wage increases that align with inflation rates and market value, in addition to compensation for unpaid tasks such as mandatory safety checks and assisting passengers before and after flights.
According to the union, attendants currently earn a monthly salary of about CAD 1,951.30, which the union considers insufficient to cover living expenses. At the end of July, 99.7% of union members (with a participation rate of 94.6%) voted in favor of the strike, reflecting a strong consensus on the need to improve working conditions.
For its part, "Air Canada" announced that negotiations have reached a "deadlock," and issued a notice of a potential shutdown of its operations starting August 16 if no agreement is reached. The union also rejected the company's proposal to resort to binding arbitration.
The company warned that the strike could lead to widespread flight cancellations, notifying customers via email and text messages in the event of flight cancellations, while ensuring full refunds.
