فتحت وزارة الصحة والخدمات الإنسانية الأمريكية تحقيقًا عاجلًا في حادثة مروعة استيقظ فيها رجل يُدعى تي جيه هوفر أثناء عملية جراحية كان من المفترض أن تُجرى له بعد إعلان وفاته دماغيًا، ضمن إجراءات التبرع بأعضائه.
وقعت الحادثة خلال ما يُعرف بـ«مسيرة الشرف»، وهي لحظة رمزية وعاطفية تُقام لتوديع المتبرعين بالأعضاء قبل استخراجها. لكن في حالة هوفر، فتح عينيه فجأة وبدأ يتتبع الحضور بنظراته، ما أثار ذهول من في الغرفة. كانت التشخيصات الطبية قد صنفته كميت دماغيًا بعد تعرضه لجرعة زائدة من المخدرات عام 2021، إلا أن عائلته وبعض العاملين في المستشفى شككوا في ذلك.
وفي تصريحات صحفية، قالت ناتاشا ميلر وهي أخصائية سابقة لحفظ الأعضاء إن المريض أظهر حركات واضحة، وكان يتخبط بشكل ملحوظ. وصرّح أحد الأطباء في منتصف العملية: (إنه ليس مستعدًا... لقد استيقظ).
من جهتها، أكدت نيكوليتا مارتن التي كانت منسقة العمليات الجراحية حينها، أن هوفر خُدّر وشُلّ حركيًا قبل الجراحة، وهي خطوة أثارت لدى البعض شبهة القتل الرحيم، خصوصا في ظل شكوك طبية متزايدة بشأن صحة تشخيص الموت الدماغي.
والآن، كل من ميلر ومارتن تركتا العمل لاحقًا في منظمة KODA، التي اندمجت مع شبكة «الأمل» للتبرع بالأعضاء، وهي الآن في قلب التحقيقات.
نجا هوفر بأعجوبة، لكنه اليوم يعاني من اضطراب ما بعد الصدمة، في حين تحوّلت أسرته إلى داعم رئيسي لحملات إصلاح قوانين التبرع بالأعضاء.
وفي يوليو الجاري، عقدت لجنة فرعية في مجلس النواب الأمريكي جلسات استماع رسمية للتحقيق في الثغرات الأخلاقية والنظامية التي كشفتها هذه الحادثة، وسط مخاوف من أن ما حدث قد لا يكون حالة فردية.
في المقابل، أصدرت شبكة «الأمل» بيانًا وصفت فيه الجلسات بأنها فرصة لتوضيح الدور الإنساني الذي تلعبه المنظمات المعنية بالتبرع، وأكدت التزامها بأعلى المعايير المهنية.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has launched an urgent investigation into a shocking incident in which a man named T.J. Hoover awoke during a surgical procedure that was supposed to take place after he was declared brain dead, as part of the organ donation process.
The incident occurred during what is known as the "Honor Walk," a symbolic and emotional moment held to bid farewell to organ donors before their organs are extracted. However, in Hoover's case, he suddenly opened his eyes and began tracking the attendees with his gaze, which astonished those in the room. Medical diagnoses had classified him as brain dead after he suffered a drug overdose in 2021, but his family and some hospital staff questioned that.
In press statements, Natasha Miller, a former organ preservation specialist, said the patient displayed clear movements and was noticeably agitated. One of the doctors stated mid-procedure: "He’s not ready... He has woken up."
For her part, Nicoleta Martin, who was the surgical coordinator at the time, confirmed that Hoover was sedated and paralyzed before the surgery, a step that raised suspicions of euthanasia among some, especially amid growing medical doubts about the validity of the brain death diagnosis.
Now, both Miller and Martin have since left their positions at KODA, which merged with the "Hope" network for organ donation and is now at the center of the investigations.
Hoover miraculously survived, but today he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, while his family has become a major supporter of campaigns to reform organ donation laws.
In July, a subcommittee in the U.S. House of Representatives held official hearings to investigate the ethical and systemic gaps revealed by this incident, amid fears that what happened may not be an isolated case.
In response, the "Hope" network issued a statement describing the hearings as an opportunity to clarify the humanitarian role played by organizations involved in donation, and reaffirmed its commitment to the highest professional standards.
