In a horrific incident that shook New York City, U.S. authorities announced that a gunman armed with an assault rifle killed four people inside a skyscraper in Manhattan, which houses the headquarters of the National Football League (NFL) and offices of several major financial companies, before taking his own life with a bullet to his chest.
The incident occurred at the Park Avenue Tower located in Midtown Manhattan, and according to authorities, among the four victims was a 36-year-old New York police officer named Didorol Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh and a father of two, with his wife pregnant with their third child.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams described the officer as a true hero, noting that he was working within a police program that allows officers to secure commercial establishments. Another man was seriously injured and is fighting for his life in a nearby hospital.
New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch explained that the gunman, identified as a 27-year-old man named Shane Tamura, who resides in Las Vegas, has a history of mental illness.
She added that Tamura traveled across the country to New York in the days leading up to the attack, and authorities have not yet been able to determine the motive behind the crime, confirming that the gunman acted alone.
The shooting began in the lobby of the tower during the evening rush hour, before the gunman moved to the offices of a management company on the 33rd floor via the elevator.
The tragedy ended with the perpetrator's suicide after shooting himself. A photo released by the media, citing police, showed the gunman entering the building carrying his rifle.
The area surrounding the tower saw a heavy security presence, as police and the FBI rushed to provide support.
