The Osaneshwar Mahadev Temple in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, northern India, witnessed a tragic incident in the early hours of Monday morning when a group of monkeys caused a power line to snap, resulting in electrocution and a stampede that claimed the lives of at least two people and injured dozens, creating a state of panic among those present.
According to local authorities, the incident occurred around 2 AM local time when a group of monkeys jumped onto a power line outside the "Osaneshwar Mahadev" temple in the Haidargah area, causing the line to break and fall onto a metal shed, which led to the electric current transferring to three metal sheds within the temple complex.
The incident resulted in at least 19 people suffering from electric shocks, while the ensuing panic led to a stampede similar to a mass rush, injuring more than 24 other individuals, according to statements from local commissioner Shashank Tripathi.
According to Indian media reports, rumors spread that the electric current had spread to the surrounding area, prompting worshippers to flee in a chaotic manner, which exacerbated the disorder of the situation. The police confirmed that they were already stationed to manage the crowds, but the speed and chaos of the incident made control difficult.
The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath, expressed his condolences to the victims' families, announcing a financial compensation of 500,000 rupees (approximately £4,300) for the families of the deceased, and pledged to expedite relief efforts and ensure the treatment of the injured. Local police and coast guard teams rushed to the scene, where worshippers were evacuated and the injured were transported to nearby hospitals.
