ويأتي هذا المشروع في إطار رؤية ترمب الرمزية لتعزيز صورة القوة في التعامل مع الجريمة والهجرة، رغم انتقادات الديمقراطيين الذين وصفوا الخطة بـ«السخيفة».
وأفادت المصادر بأن وزيرة العدل بام بوندي، ووزير الداخلية دوغ بورغوم قاما بزيارة الجزيرة أمس (الخميس) لدراسة المشروع.

وتدير وزارة العدل مكتب السجون الفيدرالية الذي سيشرف على المنشأة، بينما تمتلك وزارة الداخلية الجزيرة التي تُعدّ حالياً وجهة سياحية تابعة لهيئة المتنزهات الوطنية منذ عام 1973.
ووفقاً لمسؤولين في الإدارة، هناك 3 خيارات مطروحة:
الأول: بناء سجن «سوبرماكس» بتكلفة تزيد على ملياري دولار، مع هدم جميع المنشآت القديمة وبناء منشأة جديدة بالكامل.
الثاني: إنشاء سجن أصغر بنحو مليار دولار، يشغل جزءاً من الجزيرة.
الثالت: طرح المشروع للشركات الخاصة لتشييده وتشغيله، وهو الخيار الأقل احتمالاً.
ورغم اهتمام ترمب الشديد بالمشروع، أشار مسؤول إداري إلى أن التكلفة العالية وقيود الوقت قد تعيقان الخيار الأغلى، حيث يرغب ترمب في إنجاز المشروع خلال فترة ولايته.
كما أن الجزيرة التي أُغلق سجنها عام 1963 بسبب ارتفاع تكاليف تشغيلها تواجه تحديات بيئية، بما في ذلك تأثير حركة القوارب على الحيتان في الخليج.

ومن الناحية السياسية، يرى المقربون من ترمب أن المشروع يعكس رؤيته لفرض سياسات صارمة، خاصة في مجال الهجرة، حيث يهدف إلى ردع المهاجرين من خلال إبراز صورة القسوة.
