تسبّب زوجان في تأخير رحلة جوية لأكثر من 17 ساعة، بعد أن تم ضبطهما يدخنان داخل حمام الطائرة أثناء تحليقها في الأجواء، ما أجبر الطائرة على الهبوط اضطرارياً وتسبب في معاناة عشرات الركاب.
وأفادت تقارير إعلامية أمريكية أن الرحلة BY49 التابعة لشركة «TUI Airways»، التي كانت متجهة من كانكون في المكسيك إلى مطار غاتويك في لندن (الثلاثاء) 8 يوليو، اضطرت إلى تغيير مسارها والهبوط اضطرارياً في مطار بانغور الدولي بولاية مين الأمريكية، بعدما تم ضبط الزوجين يدخنان داخل حمام الطائرة أثناء الرحلة.
ووفقاً لما نقلته صحيفة «نيويورك بوست»، فقد هبطت الطائرة في الساعة 9:30 مساء بالتوقيت المحلي، وتم إنزال الزوجين اللذين يُعتقد أنهما كانا في حالة سكر، في حين أُبلغ باقي الركاب أن الرحلة ستُستأنف قريباً بعد إنهاء الإجراءات الورقية اللازمة.
غير أن ما بدا كإجراء بسيط تحوّل إلى أزمة امتدت لساعات، إذ اضطُر الركاب للانتظار خمس ساعات إضافية، بعد أن أصبح طاقم الطائرة غير مؤهل قانونياً لمواصلة العمل نتيجة تجاوزهم ساعات الخدمة المسموح بها، ما استدعى إرسال طاقم بديل من المملكة المتحدة.
من جانبه، وصف الراكب البريطاني تيري لورانس (66 عاماً) الأوضاع بالمزرية، قائلاً إن الركاب تم حشرهم في صالة ضيقة داخل منطقة مخصصة للقاعدة العسكرية في المطار، وأضاف «كان الأمر أشبه بساحة معركة، وكل حقائبنا كانت لا تزال داخل الطائرة».
ولم يُسمح للركاب بمغادرة ولاية مين الأمريكية إلا في الثالثة بعد ظهر اليوم التالي، أي بعد أكثر من 17 ساعة على الهبوط، في تجربة وصفها البعض بأنها «مرهقة ومحبطة»، خصوصاً لمن كانت لديهم ارتباطات أو رحلات متابعة.
وقد أثار الحادث موجة من الغضب على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي، وطالب العديد من المستخدمين بمحاسبة الزوجين وتحميلهما تكاليف التأخير والأضرار، بينما تساءل آخرون عما إذا كان بالإمكان احتواء الموقف دون هبوط اضطراري.
وكتب أحدهم «هل سيتم اعتقال المدخنين؟ وهل سيتحملون تكلفة الوقود والخسائر؟»، بينما علّق آخر «بدلاً من توقيف الرحلة، كان يمكن تسليمهم للسلطات عند الوصول».

American media reports indicated that flight BY49 operated by "TUI Airways," which was headed from Cancun, Mexico, to Gatwick Airport in London on Tuesday, July 8, had to change its course and make an emergency landing at Bangor International Airport in Maine, after the couple was caught smoking in the airplane bathroom during the flight.
According to the New York Post, the plane landed at 9:30 PM local time, and the couple, believed to be intoxicated, was removed, while the remaining passengers were informed that the flight would resume soon after completing the necessary paperwork.
However, what seemed like a simple procedure turned into a crisis that extended for hours, as passengers had to wait an additional five hours after the flight crew became legally unqualified to continue working due to exceeding the allowed service hours, necessitating the dispatch of a replacement crew from the UK.
For his part, British passenger Terry Lawrence (66) described the conditions as miserable, saying that passengers were crammed into a narrow lounge within a designated area for the military base at the airport. He added, "It was like a battlefield, and all our bags were still on the plane."
Passengers were not allowed to leave the state of Maine until 3 PM the following day, more than 17 hours after landing, in an experience that some described as "exhausting and frustrating," especially for those with connections or follow-up flights.
The incident sparked a wave of anger on social media, with many users calling for the couple to be held accountable and to bear the costs of the delay and damages, while others questioned whether the situation could have been contained without an emergency landing.
One user wrote, "Will the smokers be arrested? Will they bear the cost of fuel and losses?" while another commented, "Instead of stopping the flight, they could have been handed over to the authorities upon arrival."
