تستعد دار سوثبي للمزادات العالمية، أحد أعرق دور المزادات في العالم، لعرض نيزك مريخي نادر يُعد الأكبر من نوعه على سطح الأرض، في مزاد استثنائي مقرر إقامته في نيويورك 16 يوليو الجاري، ويعرف باسم «NWA 16788» يزن 24.67 كيلوغرام، ويُتوقع أن يصل سعره إلى 4 ملايين دولار أمريكي، ما قد يجعله أغلى نيزك مريخي يُباع في التاريخ إذا تحقق هذا السعر.
تم اكتشاف هذا النيزك في نوفمبر 2023 في منطقة أغاديز النائية في النيجر، وهي منطقة اشتهرت بأحافير الديناصورات أكثر من النيازك الفضائية، ويتميز النيزك بتركيبته المعدنية النادرة، التي يُعتقد أنها تشكلت نتيجة تبريد الحمم البركانية على سطح المريخ قبل ملايين السنين، وهو أكبر بنسبة 70% من سابقه، النيزك Taoudenni 002، الذي عُثر عليه في مالي عام 2021 وكان يزن 14.5 كيلوغرام فقط.
ويُعد المزاد الذي سينطلق عند الساعة 14:00 بتوقيت غرينتش، حدثاً فريداً يجذب هواة جمع القطع الفضائية والمستثمرين من جميع أنحاء العالم، إذ تعتبر النيازك المريخية من أندر المواد على الأرض، فقد تشكلت من شظايا انفصلت عن المريخ نتيجة اصطدامات كونية، ثم سافرت عبر الفضاء لتصل إلى كوكبنا.
وتُعتبر النيازك المريخية من أندر القطع التي تصل إلى الأرض، إذ تُشكل أقل من 0.2% من إجمالي النيازك المكتشفة، وتحمل هذه النيازك أهمية علمية كبيرة، إذ توفر أدلة عن التاريخ الجيولوجي للمريخ وإمكانية وجود حياة سابقة على الكوكب الأحمر، مثال على ذلك، النيزك Tissint الذي سقط في المغرب عام 2011، وكشف عن مركبات عضوية غير مسبوقة.
وسبق لدار سوثبي أن باعت مقتنيات فضائية نادرة، مثل قطعة من القمر بـ37800 دولار في 2022، كما باعت هيكلاً عظمياً لديناصور بـ44.6 مليون دولار في 2024، ما يعكس خبرتها في التعامل مع القطع النادرة.

Sotheby's, one of the world's most prestigious auction houses, is preparing to showcase a rare Martian meteorite, considered the largest of its kind on Earth, in a special auction scheduled to take place in New York on July 16. Known as "NWA 16788," it weighs 24.67 kilograms and is expected to fetch a price of up to 4 million US dollars, which could make it the most expensive Martian meteorite ever sold if this price is achieved.
This meteorite was discovered in November 2023 in the remote Agadez region of Niger, an area more famous for dinosaur fossils than for space meteorites. The meteorite is distinguished by its rare mineral composition, believed to have formed from the cooling of volcanic lava on the surface of Mars millions of years ago. It is 70% larger than its predecessor, the Taoudenni 002 meteorite, which was found in Mali in 2021 and weighed only 14.5 kilograms.
The auction, which will commence at 14:00 GMT, is a unique event that attracts space collectors and investors from around the world, as Martian meteorites are among the rarest materials on Earth. They formed from fragments that broke away from Mars due to cosmic collisions and then traveled through space to reach our planet.
Martian meteorites are considered some of the rarest pieces to reach Earth, making up less than 0.2% of all discovered meteorites. These meteorites hold significant scientific importance, as they provide evidence about Mars' geological history and the possibility of past life on the red planet. An example is the Tissint meteorite, which fell in Morocco in 2011 and revealed unprecedented organic compounds.
Sotheby's has previously sold rare space artifacts, such as a piece of the moon for $37,800 in 2022, and a dinosaur skeleton for $44.6 million in 2024, reflecting its expertise in handling rare items.
