A 20-year-old man attacked four people on a high-speed German train traveling from Hamburg to Vienna, using an axe and a hammer, resulting in minor injuries to them in an incident that caused panic among passengers.

According to the German police, the attack occurred at 1:55 PM local time on Thursday, on a train carrying about 500 passengers. The attacker, a Syrian national, used an axe and a hammer to suddenly assault passengers inside one of the compartments, injuring four people, three of whom are Syrian, with minor injuries, while the attacker himself was injured during the attempt to subdue him.

The police managed to arrest the suspect after one of the passengers managed to wrest one of the tools from the attacker, while others pulled the emergency brakes, which led to the train stopping and facilitated the police's intervention. Fire, rescue, and police teams rushed to the scene, and the railway line was temporarily closed to manage the situation, with the injured, including the attacker, being transported to the hospital for treatment.

The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the attack, and it has not yet been revealed whether there are any terrorist or personal backgrounds related to the incident. The railway company "Deutsche Bahn" expressed its shock at the violent attack, affirming its support for the investigations.

Germany has witnessed sporadic incidents targeting public transportation for years. In January 2023, a knife attack on a train in northern Germany resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to seven, carried out by a stateless Palestinian. In 2016, an Afghan refugee carried out an axe attack on a train in Bavaria, which was later claimed by ISIS, increasing the sensitivity surrounding such incidents.
