The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has warned that the deterioration of security conditions across northern Ethiopia is exacerbating humanitarian needs and hindering relief operations.
UN spokesperson Stefan Dujarric explained that humanitarian access is severely disrupted due to communication outages and the suspension of flights to and from the Tigray region and some locations in Amhara.
He noted that several UN partners have reduced or suspended their activities, leaving fewer humanitarian organizations operating on the ground while needs are increasing.
He pointed out that UN partners continue to monitor developments and enhance preparations and measures to ensure the continued provision of assistance wherever humanitarian access is possible. The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa, Hanna Tetteh, is also in contact with national and regional authorities and is closely coordinating efforts with partners, including the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), to support efforts for de-escalation and dialogue.
