أُعدم ريتشارد جوردان، البالغ من العمر 79 عاماً، مساء أمس (الأربعاء)، بحقنة قاتلة في سجن ولاية ميسيسيبي في بارشمان، بعد قضائه نحو 50 عاماً في انتظار تنفيذ حكم الإعدام.
ويأتي إعدامه كجزء من سلسلة عمليات إعدام هذا الأسبوع في الولايات المتحدة، حيث نفذت ولاية فلوريدا حكم إعدام بحق توماس جوديناس (51 عاماً) الثلاثاء.
وأُدين جوردان، وهو عامل في أحواض بناء السفن، عام 1976 بقتل إدوينا مارتر، زوجة مدير بنك في مدينة غولفبورت، حيث اختطف جوردان مارتر من منزلها وطالب بفدية قدرها 25 ألف دولار، لكنه أُلقي القبض عليه عندما حاول استلام المبلغ.
واعترف جوردان بقتلها، وقاد السلطات إلى جثتها المخفية في إحدى الغابات، حيث تبين أنها قُتلت برصاصة.
بدأت عملية الإعدام في الساعة السادسة مساءً، حيث استلقى جوردان على سرير الإعدام، وأخذ عدة أنفاس عميقة قبل أن يصبح ساكناً، وتم تسجيل وفاته في الساعة 6:16 مساءً.
وفي كلمته الأخيرة، قال جوردان: «أود أولاً أن أشكر الجميع على تنفيذ هذا بطريقة إنسانية، أعتذر لعائلة الضحية»، كما قدم الشكر لمحاميه، وزوجته، وطلب الصفح، مضيفاً: «سأراكم على الجانب الآخر».
كان جوردان أطول وأكبر سجين في انتظار الإعدام في ميسيسيبي. وكانت هذه أول عملية إعدام في الولاية منذ ديسمبر 2022.
من جهة أخرى، أُعدم توماس جوديناس في فلوريدا الثلاثاء بعد إدانته عام 1995 بقتل ميشيل ماكغراث، التي شوهدت آخر مرة وهي تغادر حانة في أورلاندو.
وتم العثور على جثتها المعنفة في اليوم التالي، وأُلقي القبض على جوديناس بعد وقت قصير. وتتصدر فلوريدا الولايات الأمريكية في عدد عمليات الإعدام هذا العام، حيث نفذت 7 عمليات.
وسجلت الولايات المتحدة 25 عملية إعدام في 2025، منها 20 بحقنة قاتلة، و2 بإطلاق النار، و3 باستخدام غاز النيتروجين، وهي طريقة أثارت جدلاً واسعاً بعد أن وصفها خبراء الأمم المتحدة بأنها قاسية وغير إنسانية.
يُذكر أن عقوبة الإعدام أُلغيت في 23 ولاية أمريكية، بينما تفرض 3 ولايات أخرى -كاليفورنيا وأوريغون وبنسلفانيا- وقفاً مؤقتاً لتنفيذها، فيما يؤيد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب عقوبة الإعدام، حيث دعا في أول يوم له في منصبه إلى توسيع استخدامها لأبشع الجرائم.
Richard Jordan, 79 years old, was executed last night (Wednesday) by lethal injection at the Mississippi State Penitentiary in Parchman, after spending nearly 50 years on death row.
His execution comes as part of a series of executions this week in the United States, where Florida carried out the death penalty on Thomas Goodinas (51 years old) on Tuesday.
Jordan, a shipyard worker, was convicted in 1976 of killing Edwina Martyr, the wife of a bank manager in Gulfport, where Jordan kidnapped Martyr from her home and demanded a ransom of $25,000, but he was arrested when he attempted to collect the money.
Jordan confessed to killing her and led authorities to her body hidden in a forest, where it was found that she had been shot.
The execution process began at 6 PM, where Jordan lay on the gurney and took several deep breaths before becoming still, and his death was recorded at 6:16 PM.
In his last words, Jordan said, “I would first like to thank everyone for carrying this out in a humane way, I apologize to the victim's family,” and he also thanked his lawyer and wife, asking for forgiveness, adding, “I will see you on the other side.”
Jordan was the longest-serving and oldest inmate on death row in Mississippi. This was the first execution in the state since December 2022.
On the other hand, Thomas Goodinas was executed in Florida on Tuesday after being convicted in 1995 of killing Michelle McGrath, who was last seen leaving a bar in Orlando.
Her battered body was found the next day, and Goodinas was arrested shortly thereafter. Florida leads the U.S. states in the number of executions this year, having carried out 7 executions.
The United States recorded 25 executions in 2025, including 20 by lethal injection, 2 by shooting, and 3 using nitrogen gas, a method that has sparked widespread controversy after UN experts described it as cruel and inhumane.
It is worth noting that the death penalty has been abolished in 23 U.S. states, while 3 other states—California, Oregon, and Pennsylvania—have imposed a temporary moratorium on its implementation, while U.S. President Donald Trump supports the death penalty, having called on his first day in office to expand its use for the most heinous crimes.
