Liberian President Joseph Boakai survived a serious incident on Thursday evening after his private plane experienced a tire explosion while landing at Roberts International Airport near Monrovia, causing the aircraft to stop in the middle of the runway and halting air operations for hours.
The tire explosion incident occurred during the president's return from Lagos, Nigeria, after attending the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
According to the Liberia Airport Authority, the tire explosion disrupted the landing gear, rendering the Gulfstream IV aircraft immobile, which led to the cancellation of flights from international airlines such as Kenya Airways and Air Peace, as the main runway, the only operational runway at the airport, remained closed until the plane was removed using a hand-pushed vehicle due to the absence of an appropriate crane.
The Liberia Airport Authority confirmed that all passengers, including President Boakai and his delegation, were evacuated safely with no injuries, thanks to the swift response of emergency teams. An initial statement from the airport management indicated that potholes on the runway may have contributed to the incident, before the authority later denied this account, asserting that the failure was due to a "mechanical failure" in the tire.
