أعلنت السلطات العسكرية الأمريكية، توقيف 18 جنديًا من الكتيبة السادسة لتدريب «الرينجرز» التابعة للجيش الأمريكي، بعد تداول مقاطع فيديو تُظهرهم وهم يطلقون عيارات نارية فارغة في الهواء على شاطئ «كراب آيلاند» بالقرب من مدينة ديستن في ولاية فلوريدا.
وجاء الحادث في أعقاب مشاركة جنود قوات النخبة في مهرجان «بيلي بوليجز للقراصنة» السنوي بمدينة فورت والتون بيتش، على بعد خمسة أميال من موقع الحادث، مما أثار حالة من الذعر بين المصطافين والمراكب الموجودين في المكان.
ووفقًا لتقارير إعلامية، شارك الجنود في فعالية محاكاة «معركة بحرية» ضمن مهرجان القراصنة، حيث يقومون تقليديًا بإطلاق عيارات فارغة من أسلحتهم أثناء ركوبهم قوارب صغيرة لمحاكاة الاستيلاء على سفينة قرصنة رمزية. ومع ذلك، أكدت السلطات المحلية ومنظمو المهرجان أن الحادث الذي وقع في «كراب آيلاند» لم يكن جزءًا من الفعاليات المعتمدة، ولم يتم الإعلان عنه مسبقًا أو تنسيقه مع الجهات المنظمة.

أكدت جينيفر إس. غان، المتحدثة باسم مركز التميز في المناورات التابع للجيش في فورت بينينغ، جورجيا، أن الجيش الأمريكي يحقق في الحادث بشكل جدي، وأوضحت أن الجنود الـ18 المتورطين تم توقيفهم مؤقتًا عن مهماتهم كمدربين في دورة الرينجرز بمعسكر رودر في قاعدة إيغلين الجوية بفلوريدا، في انتظار نتائج التحقيق.
وأضافت: «سنضمن المساءلة بناءً على نتائج التحقيق»، كما أشار جندي تحدث لموقع عن الواقعة لوسائل إعلام بشرط عدم الكشف عن هويته إلى أن قرار إطلاق النار في مكان مزدحم كان يعكس «سوء تقدير» من الجنود، مشككًا في احتمالية موافقة قائد كبير على مثل هذا التصرف خارج منطقة المهرجان المحددة.

The U.S. military authorities announced the suspension of 18 soldiers from the 6th Ranger Training Battalion of the U.S. Army after videos circulated showing them firing blank rounds into the air on "Crab Island" beach near Destin, Florida.
The incident occurred following the participation of elite soldiers in the annual "Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival" in Fort Walton Beach, five miles from the incident site, causing panic among vacationers and boats present in the area.
According to media reports, the soldiers participated in a simulated "naval battle" event as part of the pirate festival, where they traditionally fire blank rounds from their weapons while riding small boats to simulate boarding a symbolic pirate ship. However, local authorities and festival organizers confirmed that the incident that took place on "Crab Island" was not part of the approved events and had not been announced or coordinated with the organizing bodies.
The random gunfire led to confusion, with many vacationers seeking shelter out of fear of a real attack, especially in light of the increasing incidents of mass shootings in the United States.
The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office received two emergency calls regarding the incident that occurred last Friday, May 16, and eyewitnesses, including a rental boat captain, Michelle Ingram, reported that the soldiers caused panic due to the unwarranted gunfire, stating to local media, "This is unacceptable given the many real shooting incidents in America every year; this cannot be taken lightly."
Serious Investigations Within the Army
Jennifer S. Gunn, spokesperson for the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, confirmed that the U.S. Army is seriously investigating the incident, explaining that the 18 soldiers involved have been temporarily suspended from their duties as instructors in the Ranger course at the Rodger Camp at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, pending the investigation results.
She added, "We will ensure accountability based on the investigation's findings," and a soldier who spoke to a website about the incident on condition of anonymity indicated that the decision to fire in a crowded area reflected a "misjudgment" by the soldiers, questioning the likelihood of a senior commander approving such behavior outside the designated festival area.
The Billy Bowlegs Pirate Festival, held annually in Fort Walton Beach, is a local cultural event celebrating maritime heritage and piracy, where Rangers traditionally participate in a symbolic naval battle using blank rounds. The date and location of this approved event were previously announced, and it was limited to the "Fort Walton Beach Landing" area.
