Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo revealed details about what happened during the last camp of his national team, confirming that he had made a decision to leave the national team after the 2026 World Cup, before being asked by the president of the Portuguese Football Federation to reconsider his decision and continue with the team.
Ronaldo explained that he supported the appointment of Portuguese Jorge Jesus as the national team coach, after the federation president consulted him about several candidates, considering that his choice was "the right decision".
Ronaldo stated that his first meeting with Jesus involved agreeing on a specific program for his participation, which included playing the first and last match, managing his physical effort, and making frequent substitutions during the matches.
He added that Jesus suggested he might not travel with the team to Norway and Denmark, playing the first match and then staying in Portugal before returning to the group in preparation for the next match, but he rejected the proposal, believing that staying in Portugal was not suitable for his role as the team captain and did not represent the example he wanted to set.
Ronaldo confirmed that the understandings between him and Jesus remained in place until the day before the camp started, noting that the coach visited him at his home in Lisbon to discuss preparations.
Ronaldo participated against Wales at the José Alvalade Stadium and accepted his substitution without objection, even handing the captain's armband to Bruno Fernandes, confirming that he did not expect that moment to be his last appearance as a player and captain of the national team.
Ronaldo revealed that the surprise came on the day of the Norway match when one of Jesus's assistants informed him of the coach's desire to speak with him, before Jesus asked him to prepare to participate for 30 minutes.
He explained that the request contradicted the agreed recovery and physical preparation program, which stipulated that he would not participate again before the Dragão match, but he agreed to Jesus's request and became ready to participate.
Ronaldo emphasized that he remained committed to the national team and did not refuse to participate when asked, confirming that his goal was to serve Portugal and achieve victories with it.
