The former Brazilian star Roberto Carlos revealed that he lost about 99% of the money he earned during his football career due to complex financial and family issues he faced after retiring.
During his participation in the Portuguese Football Summit, the Real Madrid legend spoke about the difficult side of his life after the pitch, confirming that he made financial mistakes for which he later paid the price, warning young players not to repeat his experience.
Carlos, who is 53 years old, said: “I faced problems with people who were draining my financial accounts. Because of agents and family issues, I lost 99% of the income I earned during my career. I made mistakes, and that’s why I ask young players not to repeat what I did.”
He added: “I had to reorganize my financial and family situation, as I faced a serious problem with my former agent, along with a very significant family issue.”
The former Brazilian international recounted details of one moment that revealed the extent of the crisis, saying: “One night I went to bed at midnight, and the next morning I received a set of documents that I didn’t even know existed. At that point, I completely lost control of my past.”
Although he did not disclose the nature of the documents or the details of his financial and family crises, Carlos confirmed that he is trying to turn his experience into a lesson for the new generation, saying: “I tell young people about all the bad things that happened to me in my life so they don’t repeat the same mistakes.”
The 2002 World Cup champion did not overlook the importance of planning for life after retirement, pointing out that building a brand name and preparing for the next phase should start before leaving the pitch.
He said: “It’s about building your own story as a player and leveraging your image and brand name. When I decided to stop playing, I had already obtained a sports director license and was working with several brands.”
Carlos played 125 international matches with the Brazilian national team, winning the 2002 World Cup with them, and also secured three Champions League titles with Real Madrid before ending his playing career in 2015.
After experiencing coaching stints in Turkey and India, Carlos is currently working as an ambassador for Real Madrid and FIFA.
